How's your Toy Gearbox going Spud ??

Have you blown it up again of late ???? hysterical.gif hysterical.gif

Spud's idea of a offroad vehicle is to literally keep it off the roads & in the garage laugh.gif laugh.gif

Well Freddy !

You better start saving your penny's cause

In a few years time when I upgrade to the newer model Datsun I may allow to upgrade you thingy you call a 4WD & sell you my old one laugh.gif laugh.gif

I think not, I was told that it was road tested in a paddock when it was new. I bet they were trying to see if they could break it laugh.gif
SUMOFISHIN
Well Freddie,
I did happen to road test that Datsun, in a paddock up on a Rocky Mountain when it was New,(not that I impressed it's owner too much )and it Performed Quite well, unlike a few of those UNBREAKABLE utes that are still up there broken on the rocks and rolled in the gullies, To sum it up the new Datson was impressive a vast improvement on the old ones. But it is WAY out of reach of Martin's Budget.
MartinF
thanks for the advice again guys.

Just wanted to ask you opinion on pajero's, like say this one http://www.gumtree.com.au/sydney/62/16980362.html

There's a few of them around, a couple a lot newer than this one as well, and they're quite decently priced for the most part.

Again my own preference would be for a toyota or nissan but like to keep my options open anyway. Would you say the mitsu would be a far inferior choice?

Frank, I'm well aware of my own limitations and as has been said, most of the tracks I'm looking at are more well traveled than some of the really remote/hard tracks. Also, thousands of backpackers travel them each year in 4wds with a lot less of an idea for what to expect. Granted.. some of them get themselves pretty well stuck as well smile.gif I think I told It'll do the story I read of some dutch backpackers who took a cruiser up to Cape York and didn't want to pay for the ferry at the Jardine river and attempted to just drive across it even though it was about 2 inches deeper than the hood of the car and they obviously got stuck. Morons.. spent 2 hrs on the top of the car and that place is infested with crocs as well.
Jumpus GooDarus
Martin 4Wd's these days are much the same.

many moons ago when I had a landcruiser we'd put shite on the nissan's theses days it's vias versa

I chose the Navara this this for a number of reasons

Liked it's looks
Towing capacity
Had a nissan 300ZX & it was the most reliable car that I ever owned
Was looking @ the Hilux @ time of purchase but the Navara got the nod esp with the rear fold up seats

As long as you stick with either a toy or Nissan you should be right Martin just steer clear of the other 4WD's
nimrod
I won't say too much about the Pajero. ( as my opinion will only be shot down ) Will mention WA rego that has expired.
Are you going to go through the process of NSW blue slip, or drive the car unregistered till you get to WA, or do you know someone in WA that you can use their address for Rego.
poly
Martin i owned a 92 model for 8 years i found it to be a very honest hard working wagon that never let me down in the bush and i have taken it to the same places as me mate in his Toyota 70sires it was not quit as good but still got me there smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

Frank i would be interested to here what u think of them dry.gif
MartinF
Hmm I thought you could still extend the WA rego over the internet even if you're not living there.. that's why the WA registered cars are so popular with backpackers.

I def wouldn't put it on NSW rego since that's a pain anyway and way too expensive but you do raise a good point (for this particular one). I was looking at another pajero (92 model) the other day that was pretty nice.

Only thing is that it looked like the back seat couldn't really fold completely flat out of the way, just sort of double over which wouldn't be ideaal.

Think I might give that '91 GQ another look tomorrow if it's still for sale and pick that up. Have to start making a move soon. Although Frank, your offer about the car is pretty good as well. At least that way I know that I'm buying a car that has been looked after properly with no hidden faults and what not.

Maybe we can meet up this weekend or something if you've got time? Weather will prob be shite again anyway.
MartinF
This one was just put up

http://www.gumtree.com.au/sydney/65/22894965.html

Price is a bit high but it does have aftermarket suspension, snorkel, some goodies and a fridge (which are like $1000+ new) so will give them a call tonight as well, see if I can't talk em down a bit.
It'l Do
Martin, If you want something to sleep in stop looking at mid size 4WD's.

That 60 series comes with a lot of things. 21lt fridge is small, I have a 40lt and think that is small. I don't think a 21lt fridge would cost $1000 but could be wrong.

NSW rego would run out about the time you were in WA so that is not a problem.

Price is higher than you want to spend but from the photos it looks in good condition.

I say its worth a look and make an offer.
Spudly
That 60 crusier looks good mate!

Martin. Although I have no doubts that my Rangy would cope very well with anything you could throw at it and do the trip with ease.
It is a mid wheel base and I have actually taken the rear seat out of it to accomadate my full body length.
With the rear seat simply folded up there was not enough room for me to properly streatch out, and it was uncomfortable to sleep in. I am going to build a false floor in it and have slide out draws etc in the back. But this will be some time in the future.

That Cruiser you put up last seems to be the pick of the bunch so far. If your budget could streatch that far, as it already has many of the pieces you would need.
Don't like all that weight on the roof and you would have to find somewhere to store all that stuff so you could have the boat on the rack.
Pity is hasn't got steps on it.
I could convert the steps into fuel carriers which hold approx 30ltrs each side and gives a low centre of gravity for the weight.
I have made these before and maybe I should patent the idea, but then I have plenty of ideas that I should have had a patent on.
Another good idea is for a 4'' pvc pipe along the bottom of the bull bar for carrying oil. Diff g/box oil incase water contamination etc.
There is no end to the things you can do to save room and be prepaired for whatever may happen.
nimrod
I forgot. I am sure you are aware of it but the better equiped the car is the better the re sale will be when it comes time to sell it and go home.
In this way you will be more lucky then most backpackers, cause if you like you will be able to take your time selling it.
You could leave it with one of us guys to sell it for you and transfer the money. That way you could keep the car till you leave and could hold out for the price you want.
Many visitors loose heaps of dollars cause they have to sell cheap to sell quick.
This is where the specialist backpacker caryard makes heaps, they play on the fact that those leaving have to get whatever they can, and those like you who are starting their trip have to pay what's asked.

Martin,

Forgot what city did you say your journey ends?
You could see if someone could store the excess items if your journey finishes in Sydney.

Any news on 4B huntin?

Frank, Just to recap Martin needs the back seat installed, backpacker thing, needs to share the cost of the fuel.
When traveling by himself he wants the ability to comfortably sleep in the thing, you know a backpacker motel on wheels. laugh.gif

I know just bite the bullet and buy Sumo's RV, it's only money. :sumo: (I have no idea why the emoticon has Sumo's name on it but it must mean something to the original members. I hope it is funny)

yes mate that is what i was trying to say ( my car would not be suitable for his needs ) .
maybe I didn't explain myself too clearly.
MartinF
hey guys,

Thanks again for all the help. My trip ends (if indeed it does end, one never knows) in Sydney in all likelihood. Although if I do decide to stay a second year, I will forfeit my flight back to Holland anyway so I could fly from anywhere in Oz. Most likely though it will still be Sydney.

You're exactly right, I was actually eying a GQ that dropped about $1000 in three days because the guys didn't factor in enough time to sell the car before their flight back. If I do run into to trouble like that (although that's unlikely as I intend to spend the last month or so back here) it would be great if I could leave the car with one of you to sell it for me.

I called the guys with the cruiser but they were in the Blue Mountains for the weekend and I'm meeting up with them tomorrow morning. I'm hoping to get them down to around $6500 for it which I think is reasonable at the moment. Most others go for around $5500-$6000 but this one has more stuff on it. Realistically if I pay a lot more than that I won't get it back when I sell it again unless I get really lucky.

Frank if I do get it, that sounds like a good conversion and like I said in my PM I have some other things I want to put on as well so your help will be much appreciated. You're right in saying that the more is on there, the more it will sell for but up to a point, since backpacker budgets are limited. That goes for my budget too. Although I have plenty of money in savings back home, I don't want to blow it all on a car, so I've made a budget for the car/boat and one for my traveling expenses. Once that runs out I'll have to start working.. *yuch* ;-)

Anyway will let you guys know how I get on tomorrow. It certainly looks the business and has all the goodies but could still be a heap of crap of course..
MartinF
Well good news guys.

I got the landcruiser. The last link, the white 60-series.

It's a good ride, raised a little bit, no odd noises in the drive shaft or diffs (like one I drove last week). Decent tyres, serviced properly, good history and lots of extras. Needs just a few things before I'm happy with it but mostly it's pretty good. They took my offer of $6500, having been offered lowered amounts earlier as I was expecting. Didn't want to risk having it stolen out from under me again so I thought I'd stay on the high side of the backpacker prices.

Realistically I think it's worth it. Looks good, couple small spots of rust but no real worries there and runs smooth as well. Plus it has pretty much everything I would want including a fridge (although admittedly a small one). Of course it hasn't been fitted out for boating/fishing so will need some work to get that sorted but over all I'm really very happy.

I can finally start looking ahead now and get underway with The Big Trip smile.gif

I'm looking for a few things so if anyone has any second hand stuff they want to get rid of, please let me know.

- spot/driving lights for on the bullbar (bar already has the wires and places where they bolt on, just none on there atm)
- possibly a winch, although would have to see if it would fit on there
- 2 way radio/cb type thing plus aerial
- Good sized esky. There's one with it but I want another one for fishing
- Spear-fishing spear. Just a non-powered one, not a spear-gun

If I take up Frank's kind offer to lend me the boat, I'll need an outboard in the sort of 9.9HP ballpark

Also if someone has crab pots or a cast net that they're looking to get rid of, that'll save me buying them new.

Just so we're clear, not looking for hand-outs but if I can save money buying second hand, why not.

There will be more stuff I'll need but for now that's it.

Cheers.. I'm off to have a beer and celebrate biggrin.gif

oh btw It'll do, you were right. I was thinking of a fridge/freezer but this is more of a cooler type thing. Saw it today at BCF for around $250 or so. Still, it's nice to keep a couple drinks cool.

Martin. That is great news mate, it looks like it is a good thing.
OK I can help you out with quiet a few of the things on your list.
2x 4" driving lights. I think I have some fog lamps here as well. You would have to have relays etc.
Uhf 40 channel cb radio and gutter mount arial.
Can set you up with bull bar rod holders x 4.
Can give you 4" pvc pipe threaded on one end with cap, can hold 12' beach rod or smaller.
Can even set you up with very cheap beach rod and 6" alvey reel if you want.
I do have an old hand spear you can have.
I have a 6' drop cast net somewhere, just have to find where I put it, ( probably down Bermagui ).
Unfortunately I don't have a large esky, but I do have an original Malleys metal 60 ltr esky that has never had food in it. But this is more a collectors item rather then a useful appliance.
I could get you a good discount on a new cooler, if you want to go that way, let's say 20%.
Unfortunately this offer is only open to visitors from overseas who are going around Australia.
As previously mentioned I have a 12' flat bottom square nose punt.

Anything else you can think of just let me know and I'm sure we can work something out for you.

OHHH just thought of something else you may have a use for is a portable GPS but then the in car ones these days are cheap as chips and something that I defenately would reccomend.

I have been reading the thread and watching your progress. Sound like that you got a very good deal and are very happy with the outcome.

Frank mate, you wouldn't happen to have a hot looking, sweet and caring (cooking, cleaning, ironing, that sort of thing) 22-26 year old single daughter somewhere as well would you? hahahaha hysterical.gif

Amazing!

I brought my GPS from home with me.. it's a PDA with TomTom for the cities but I also put Oziexplore on there and have the Hema maps and all that on my laptop, just have to figure out how to get it to work as I couldn't try it back home but that shouldn't be a problem, computers being something I actually do know a little bit about smile.gif

Give me a call when you get a moment mate so I know when I can bring the beast over and talk about all this stuff.

Really good stuff, you're really helping me out here!

Bees, I'm good for undies, it's just my lingerie collection that that could use a bit of a boost atm, but realistically, once I leave the city I'm not going to wear it as much so it can go in the trunk with the high heels and pumps biggrin.gif

You are welcome to them if you want them. they won't take up much room, but they are the type of thing that is not essential for a round aust trip.

That package is going to be WAY over Martins budget, and 20 hp is getting to the size where you don't want to be logging it around fitting and taking off in uncool situations like steep banks etc.
With 20 hp Martin would get to the point of not going through the hassles of getting the boat into the water, on more occasions then not.
He would thereby miss out on a lot of water travel that he would do with a much small, lighter, no hassles 6 or 9.9 hp.

Just My opinion of what would happen.

I have been through it myself.
Jumpus GooDarus
Prob will be over his budget but all it takes is one ph call to find out
MartinF
yeah good point actually. It's not like I'm a huge guy either so engine size would be a factor. My brother has a 6Hp 4-stroke (obviously much heavier than a 2stroke) and that's getting up to the sort of weight where you can't easily manhandle it at weird angles. Plus the heavier it is, the more momentum it's going to have in the car on corrugations and stuff as well.

Have had a good think about it and looking at finances and all that and I think I'd prob be best off to take you up on your kind offer of lending me the boat Frank.

So just have to find an outboard for it now. There's a pretty decent looking 6HP for sale in Newcastle on ebay but maybe there's a marina or something here in Sydney area that would be worth having a look at?

I'm already looking forward to being in the desert with the car and seeing all the looks on peoples faces. Or offloading it, putting it down in the sand somewhere, putting the motor on, breaking out the rods and sitting in the boat hahahaha.. that's gonna make an awesome picture biggrin.gif

Oh btw Frank, looks like I'll be able to take delivery of the car tomorrow, possibly even tonight. Just in time to flee out of the city centre for Anzac day
Spudly
That boat looks suspiciosly like a skua.. Probably not what your after as they ar a prtty havy boat for the size due to extra ribbing and reinforcement.
nimrod
Martin. While I think of it there is one other item ( i'm sure you would have thought of it ) totally beside fishing or camping and that is tri pods, have you got ?.
And you will need a short shaft 16" motor for the punt.
I have got a 6 hp johnson that I used to use on on. But i have lent it to someone else.
Alternately I do have a 9.9 marina here but it had corrosion on the head bolts and head, and while trying to remove the head, I broke it in about 5 pieces. I have since bought another head for it but haven't got gaskets etc.
If someone could take the time who knows what they are doing to fit the head back on, and no doubt it would be in need of impella for water pump.
IF someone could fix this for me then Martin could also borrow the motor and would not have to purchase one.
Trouble now is time is moving on and we would have to move quickly.
nimrod
Martin. This seems to be the only one on Ebay at the moment within easy pick up.
You could expect the bid to go up double what it is at the moment, and would still be good buying.
You could re sell it at the end of your trip so keep that in mind as well.

http://i15.ebayimg.com/02/i/000/e7/ca/53b2_2.JPG

OK I can't get the link to work.
ebay item # 290223715406 it is at $ 510 at the moment with approx 8 hours left.
It'l Do
Martin, great news on the 60. I assume you paid for it and drove it home straight away?

As said before Frank's offer of the punt is very generous and I think you made the right decision accepting it.
I would be surprised but a 6hp would be a perfect match. A modern 9.9 (10hp) would be really the max I would consider but Franks knows the boat so take his advice.

Don't forget to post up a picture.
