Checking the weather forecast last night, it said an 80% chance of rain. I waited for it, but it didn't look like coming, so at 10am, headed off for a fish off the rocks. What a glorious morning. The sea was glassy with only a 2 ft swell and the water was crystal clear. I didn't see another soul as I walked along the track and the platform was there for only me. Fished in my undies so that I could get rid of my shorts tan.
I got my first down in only a minute of drift and landed a nice solid blackfish. Re-bait and same story. The plan was to get three for a meal or two and then head back. At this rate I would only be here for 20 minutes, so after the third fish, I tied on a weed fly that a mate had given me. The float went downwards at a rate of knots so I lifted the rod tip and hooked up solidly. A smaller fish, but my first on an artificial. No need to bait up and I just cast in. I wasn't too sure how long to leave the float under, but most strikes resulted in another fish. Dropped a few, but hey, this was fun. As I wound in after a missed strike, the float was at my feet and the fly was swirling around in the wash, but on the surface. A big drummer swoffed it off the surface and dived back to his lair. I had him on for about 10 seconds and turned him twice, but a determined dive and the 6lb trace snapped. Bye bye fly. Five fish on the fly and four on bait. Checked the time and saw I had been here for 2 hours, so kept five fish and cleaned them before trekking back out. Saw a boat trolling back to the Port, which looked like a Star Wars Jeddi Transporter, but I don't think our Jedi ever takes his out does he? Heaps of surface fish around as I was fishing. Had a visit from a Pacific Gull. Big birds, twice the size of our common Silver Gulls and a rare sighting around Sydney. It enjoyed picking over a blackfish frame. I can hear thunder as I write this, so the rain must be coming.... This post has been edited by kkw: Mar 29 2012, 03:53 PM |

You're doing better than me KK we sneaked out to the peak on Tuesday to feed the leather jackets with my new you beaut SP kingy jiggy thingy.
Was a nice day out though with plenty of bait on the surface. I couldn't even get a bite in the shoutbox with camel-toes & smooth-grooves as bait. -------------------- SEAFARER: Fine as a Fairy's Fart |

Can't get rid of me that quickly. Cann venture a good guess at the nationality of the drowning victim though.

The news report said they were all related (father, son, nephew) and one I saw on TV was Asian so I guess the dead guy was too.
More often than not it seems to be Asian people getting into trouble off the rocks, I don't know if it's because they do a lot of rock fishing or maybe none of them can swim, they could be just F**Ked in the head too. -------------------- SEAFARER: Fine as a Fairy's Fart |

Went out for a bit of a session today, with my mate Whisperin Jack and Rick. Started the day with a half hour off the rocks inside the heads, but only got a single down. The swells looked to have dropped overnight, so we hiked out to the coast and arrived at the platform to find one person fishing. He was bait fishing and had landed a few sweep and wirrah, so the arrival of three more fishos, wasn't a problem. I was first to bait up and cast in. Sixty seconds later and I was on. Good fish landed. The action was constant and a few big swells had us seeking higher places, but all in all it was a fantastic morning and the water was just glorious. Two more guys came down, but there just wasn't enough room on the platform, so they tried a few other spots, unsucessfully. They left to head a bit further north. Then three more arrived and they also tried elsewhere. I haven't seen this many rock fishermen at this spot, ever.
The guy who was bait fishing, was interested in our setups (probably because we were getting fish and he wasn't), so John gave him some 6lb leader and a hook, and I showed him how to select and rig the bait. He ended up catching a nice blackie, his first, and he was very happy. We fished for three hours all up, and were visited by a pod of dolphins and the Pacific Gull came back as well. Left them biting. I tried the weed fly again and landed three fish on it, but they were tentative today and not slamming it like they did last week. Whispering Jack landed 6 nice fish, Rick got 1 drummer (which he was targetting) and I fluked 13 good fish. Kept 6 for friends and myself and released 7 good sized fish. Pics to come, when my 'phone is charged. John has a down..... He's on.... my haul - half of them were released. |

I could rectify that, Frank. Only seconds before, I could have photographed them all in a keeper net, but that would only resemble a bag of tangled bodies.
I think the nigger reports have run their course, so I will give it a brak for a while. Did get a bunch of flathead on lures the other week, but didn't take my camera out on the kayak. |
