Why does my battery (12V, 6 cells) have 11 plates?
I just don't get it? -------------------- ![]() SEAFARER: Fine as a Fairy's Fart |

To my way of thinking a 12V battery should have 12 plates 2 for each cell, they're really only 6 battery cells wired in series.
It's got me beat how they work with 11 plates but get this, my boat battery has got 13 plates??? I just don't get it. -------------------- ![]() SEAFARER: Fine as a Fairy's Fart |

My batteries just sit in a plastic box. Why do you need plates? I don't get it.

to do with plate size fed, to get right voltage need the right amount of surface area to create the 21v.
cranking batteries use thin plates which wont hold a charge as long.. deep cycles use thick plates, which hold the charge longer but wont relese it quick enough for cranking and such! |

and the 11 or 13 plates means plates PER Cell... not totall plates!!

QUOTE 11 or 13 plates means plates PER Cell... not totall plates!! Ah Ha! Now that makes a bit more sense Rumpus, needless to say I've never axed or chainsawed a battery open. Now it begs the question, I wonder why the odd number? You'd think there say 6 positive plates & 6 negative plates in each cell. Good one Rumpus, what do you know about Etecs? -------------------- ![]() SEAFARER: Fine as a Fairy's Fart |

I've got an old battery here Fed. Come and get it. You can chainsaw it as much as you like. (at your place, not mine)

each cell is opposite, first cell will be say neg then second cell is pos.
so neg cells have 6 neg plates and 5 pos plates, then pos cell has 6 pos plates and 5 neg plates.. ![]() |

Sorry Rumpus you're starting to lose me, you can't just have a 'positive cell'.

think of each cell having the opposite plates on each end, so then as they all run along they are connected in Series.
Each cell might add up to 2v and having 6 cells will give you 12 volts. |

(+-+-+-+-+-+) (-+-+-+-+-+-) (+-+-+-+-+-+) (-+-+-+-+-+-) (+-+-+-+-+-+) (-+-+-+-+-+-)
each + and - represent a plate, there are you 6 (cells), first one +, Second one - and so on, and your first cell is + (pos terminal) and last is negative (neg terminal) That is an 11 plate, 6 cell battery.. a 13 plate battery would have 2 extra plates in each cell.. they will always be a odd number. hope that helps!? |

Wouldn't you think if you put a voltmeter across each cell the reading would be zero?
Voltmeter from first + to last plus? Here------>(+-+-+-+-+-+)<------ and here. -------------------- ![]() SEAFARER: Fine as a Fairy's Fart |

hahaha....
Ok, well you wouldnt take a reading from the end of the cells, in each cell all the pos plates are linked and all the neg plates are linked think they called straps or bridge? they are then connected in series with the next cell, though the pos is connected to the neg on the next cell and visa versa. If you wanted to take a reading of a single cell you would measure potential difference of the positive cells against the negative cells via the plate straps. not two positive cells.. |

Now I've gotcha, the plates are connected in parallel within the cells then in series with each cell.
The little drawing (+-+-+-+-+-+) led me to think they were in series within each cell. -------------------- ![]() SEAFARER: Fine as a Fairy's Fart |
