Why does my battery (12V, 6 cells) have 11 plates?
I just don't get it?
NetPez
jesus fed my name is pez , im a mere mortal you had better ask
a higher being these questions......
maybe Jumpy can answer them
Jumpus GooDarus
Probably cause Fed cant count laugh.gif laugh.gif
Fed
To my way of thinking a 12V battery should have 12 plates 2 for each cell, they're really only 6 battery cells wired in series.
It's got me beat how they work with 11 plates but get this, my boat battery has got 13 plates???

I just don't get it.
kkw
My batteries just sit in a plastic box. Why do you need plates? I don't get it.
Jumpus GooDarus
Shinny is refering to boat batteries not rock shoe plates kk laugh.gif laugh.gif
Spudly
to do with plate size fed, to get right voltage need the right amount of surface area to create the 21v.

cranking batteries use thin plates which wont hold a charge as long..

deep cycles use thick plates, which hold the charge longer but wont relese it quick enough for cranking and such!
Spudly
and the 11 or 13 plates means plates PER Cell... not totall plates!!

Ah Ha! Now that makes a bit more sense Rumpus, needless to say I've never axed or chainsawed a battery open.

Now it begs the question, I wonder why the odd number?
You'd think there say 6 positive plates & 6 negative plates in each cell.

Good one Rumpus, what do you know about Etecs?
kkw
I've got an old battery here Fed. Come and get it. You can chainsaw it as much as you like. (at your place, not mine)
Spudly
each cell is opposite, first cell will be say neg then second cell is pos.

so neg cells have 6 neg plates and 5 pos plates, then pos cell has 6 pos plates and 5 neg plates..

Boat engines, White, Some people love em, some people hate em....

Had nothing to do with em myself...
Fed
Sorry Rumpus you're starting to lose me, you can't just have a 'positive cell'.
Spudly
think of each cell having the opposite plates on each end, so then as they all run along they are connected in Series.

Each cell might add up to 2v and having 6 cells will give you 12 volts.
Spudly
(+-+-+-+-+-+) (-+-+-+-+-+-) (+-+-+-+-+-+) (-+-+-+-+-+-) (+-+-+-+-+-+) (-+-+-+-+-+-)

each + and - represent a plate, there are you 6 (cells), first one +, Second one - and so on, and your first cell is + (pos terminal) and last is negative (neg terminal)

That is an 11 plate, 6 cell battery.. a 13 plate battery would have 2 extra plates in each cell.. they will always be a odd number.

hope that helps!?
Fed
Wouldn't you think if you put a voltmeter across each cell the reading would be zero?
Voltmeter from first + to last plus?
Here------>(+-+-+-+-+-+)<------ and here.
Spudly
hahaha....

Ok, well you wouldnt take a reading from the end of the cells,

in each cell all the pos plates are linked and all the neg plates are linked think they called straps or bridge? they are then connected in series with the next cell, though the pos is connected to the neg on the next cell and visa versa.

If you wanted to take a reading of a single cell you would measure potential difference of the positive cells against the negative cells via the plate straps. not two positive cells..
Fed
Now I've gotcha, the plates are connected in parallel within the cells then in series with each cell.
The little drawing (+-+-+-+-+-+) led me to think they were in series within each cell.
Spudly
Yea,,, haha, ive tried to find a pic on the net but there cant find anything which really shows it..

but ya got it now.. smile.gif
Jumpus GooDarus
Now I've got to educate a GOOSE & A POTOTO FARMER laugh.gif laugh.gif

Spudly
and what is that spose to be jumpy,

10 AA's all linked in series! ?

;p
Spudly
Here ya go fed.....

Good pic Rumpus but you will find the cells would have to be connected in series to get 12V.
Get the black rubber and rub out some of the black lines. I've got your drift though.
Spudly
yea, i got a bit excited there didnt I..
Fed
Probably laughing at the 10 x AAs.

I just don't get it. hysterical.gif
Spudly
neither?
Well there is a pic of jumpy laying an egg??
Fed
That's not Jumpy that's a GOOSE, Oh wait,...yes it is!
NetPez
not insulting a goose are we? emot108.gif
Jumpus GooDarus
The white thingy is Fed the goose & the udder thingy is spudly the spud
poly
I don't care how the battery works, just so long as it starts the the bloody car.
