BOTANY BAY: 28TH Jan 2010
“Turtle Day” Just got home and had a beer (or 2 or 3) … thought I’d post a report for today. Pretty good day all up! Didn’t get out until “late” – still incoming tide at the ramp. Decided to try out some new skirt lures we got earlier in the week; trolled from 2nd runway to the heads and back – NO GOOD! In the mean time we battled with tugs and container boat – THEY THINK THEY OWN THE CHANNEL ‘COS OF THEIR SIZE! GEEZ! Went over to near the bombie off Bare Is; swell and chop to about 1 –1.5 metres. Caught a couple of legal-sized breamskis - enough to feed us when they are ‘gilled/gutted/scaled/stuffed. Hung around for an hour or 3 and then headed home! Don’t feel like I have been through the washer today! So … pretty good day! THE TITLE: When we arrived at the ramp someone had putout an old trap (probably looking for muddies) and had caught a turtle (NOT a tortoise – it had flippers). I saw the trap on the other side of the ramp when we pulled up and by the time FED had parked the car it had washed down to the wharf. We were going to free the poor thing but it was DEAD! Fair sized turtle for up the Georges R. About 18” x 14” (45cm x 35cm) … had a large head and a beak … sort of looked like a “snapping turtle”. Anyone hear about these sorts of turtles in the Georges River? I know we have sharks … BUT turtles? HEY JUMPUS ….. we saw your old blue boat heading out of the Georges R on the way home! |

Saw Jumpy's old Penguine on the way home too, powered by a single motor of all things.

QUOTE Decided to try out some new skirt lures we got earlier in the week; trolled from 2nd runway to the heads and back – NO GOOD! Wasting your time using skirted lures in the Bay, if ewe insist on trolling use divers QUOTE – THEY THINK THEY OWN THE CHANNEL ‘COS OF THEIR SIZE! GEEZ! It's only going to get worse once the extentions are finished to the port. I went off my dial @ wun of the pilot boats a couple of weeks back, blu the shit out of him We3 were trolling squiddies along Molly Pt I'd gotten to the end & had just started a U turn there was a ship heading out to sea about 500 meters away from us, pilot boat was @ eastern end of molly when he hit the hammers & came charging towards us creating a huge wash. I called him a F****n Idiot & told him to wake up to himself he tried to back chat me & I told him to F*** off & stop creating wash @ no time was I ever between the channel markers & he had no right to do wot he did QUOTE Saw Jumpy's old Penguine on the way home too, powered by a single motor of all things. Johnny lives out your way Fed, he's got a 150 hp honda 4 banger on the back & I've been told he makes a nuisence of himself on the water trying to show off -------------------- Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

the sighting of a turtle dead or alive is probably worth sending an email to the NPW or like agency .... just so they can keep track of stuff like that.

I dragged the trap out of the water and left it up on the wharf Pirate, Revesby is looked after by the NPW so the ranger would have found it for sure.
The skirted lures we were using were those ones you put a sinker in Jumpy and I managed to jam a pretty big sinker into them to try & get some depth, then we only ran very slowly with a stop every now & then to let them sink as well. Don't think they were running as deep as the deep diver though. Did manage to catch a downrigger while we were bait fishing, a guy cut through our cube trail and picked up my line. How deep does your finder normally show the Kings? -------------------- SEAFARER: Fine as a Fairy's Fart |

How deep does your finder normally show the Kings? Depends on how deep they are cruising & the depth of water. Tis a matter of getting out regularly & learning to decipher the readings on the screen Sounder wont say hey fed these are Kungs It's up to the user to determine how different species show up ps] was told that ewe got a hat for your Gargally in the front garden today -------------------- Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

We must have just missed you mate, as soon as a saw the hat I looked at Denise and said, "Jumpy".
I've noticed on my sounder patches of fish as I'm cruising around, they're always between about 4 & 5 Metres and side by side rather than stacked on top of each other. Was wondering if they were Kings. I'm more used to sounder with flashing lights that fly round in circles & paper charts. -------------------- SEAFARER: Fine as a Fairy's Fart |

Was wondering if they were Kings. Prob not, without seeing your readings I'd only be guessing like I said best way to ID is from expirience my sounder never gets turned off & I'm allways looking @ it esp if a fushy is hooked I take note of the readings & use that knowledge to access for next time. Those who've been out with me know velly well I can even tell when they're about to get a bite when fushing for snapper, snapper show up very distinctivelty -------------------- Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |
