Just wondering if anyone has info on the best way to use blades lures. Im keen to try some and have heard bream love them. Are they a retrieve like a soft plastic or a slow wind with a few twitches etc. be good to get some other fishermans thoughts on this.

Haven't used them myself

Sure sum wun here has used them

BUT I'm a believer it's not the lure but the action of the lure that catch's the fushys

twitch's are fine but keep the lure moving even if it's ever so slowly

You can slow roll blades, but they work much better fished like a plastic. Slow lift, then let it sit for a little bit. Fish will just pick them up off the bottom. You have to be quick, though, rarely do they run with them like they do with soft plastics.

Scents smeared on them work well too.

Have ewe tried Channel no 5 ?? hysterical.gif

Joey !

Wot I do with any lure whether it be SP, HB etc etc is b4 casting it just swim it along the boat 1st, can do the same if Land Based o get a feel how it swims then give it varies twitch's etc just to see wot it does.

Doing this lets ewe see how it performs when out of sight

No different to say trolling a skirted lure if the lure isn't swiming right there's a fa chance the wittle fishys will eat it

I will try Channel No 5 jumpus as the BRUT ive sprayed on hasnt had much success.

Ive lost two blades due to snags as Im land based at the moment and was hoping a slow retreive would be the go. Im not keen on losing my new stiffy blade. Might try down at clontarf where there seem to be not many snags and give catch n releases method a go

Ive been fishing for not that long so after purely bait fishing and just watching your lines sit out there waiting for a fish I thought Id take a more pro active method of catching fish. Have only tried bades briefly but am loving the soft plastics at the moment. Even though the ones I have caught are tiddlers the anticipation is awesome when you feel a hit. Keen to try as many techniques as possible but will wait to try hard bodies from a boat. If anyone has any tips about hard bodies from land them Id be happy to listen. Im mainly fishing for bream and flathead around the harbour but open to suggestions about locations and types of lures to buy. Haven got any hardbodies yet.

All the best guys...

I'm not a believer of scents on lures esp on lures such as blades they're metel & scent if it does anything @ all which I doubt velly much will wash off as soon as it hits the water plastics can @ least absorb the solution for a wittle while

it's 2 easy 4 me to take the piss out of peeps when I read stuff like that & googlefushy cops it off me all the time all in goodarus fun hysterical.gif

I'm actually waiting for him to come back & tell us about the time turned a hadboy lure into a soft plastic by rubbing it with Oil of Ulan hysterical.gif hysterical.gif

It sort of is you need to be mindfull of wots down there & not let the lure sink down to deep working it back all the way without hesitating else it will sink & snag it's no different out of a boat.

If the bottom dosen't allow the lure to be used then dont use them there, switch over to a diving HB or lightly weight SP

I much prefer bait fushing if down correctly ewe can have the fish biting non stop for hrs BUT I do enjoy tossing lures about as well very successfully when bait fushng cause I've got the burley going & fush right behind the boat

It's not so much about the lure, any lure within reason will catch ewe fushys. I get given lures all the time to try out & if ewe saw just 2 of my tackle box's your eyes would pop out of your head & they all work both SP & Hb.

It's more about technique by that I mean your retrieve that's why I mention earlier swim the lure in eyesight watch it twitch it @ different types of jerking motions just to see wot it looks like & if you're happy with it then that's the retrieve to use.

I 1st used soft plastics 30 odd years back & threw them in the bin afer a few trips of catching nut tings, back then we were absolutely clueless & retrieved the lures back as if we would a metal slice doing a high speed retrieve for the pelagics till hey smashed into the rocks @ our feet.

Times have changed since the know how was brought back from the USA

Every now & then I dont mind grabbing a rod & going for a walk LB'd to flick lures it's good fun just look for gutters, drop off's [4 flathead] if fushing whaves flick the lure under the wharf that's where they'll be not outin the open.

It's an odd thing back when I fushed land based we allways ried getting our baits out as far as we could, as boaties we try & get as close to structure as possible

I use the Ultrabite paste and sometimes the Squidgy S-Factor. I don't bother with oils or liquid scents, they come off too easily. I have found fish definitely prefer blades when you smear some scent (mainly Ultrabite) on them. It just turns some of those lookers into takers. The Ultrabite stays on for ages too, often I have to wash it off at the end of the session. It stinks too, so even a little bit of it will give the blade a strong smell. Just get it into the little nooks and crannies in the blade.

Googlefushy have ewe ever stoped to think it's an illusion ??

Have to admit I'm guilty @ times as well when I get a new product to try out & it catch's fushy's right away

Then I sit back & think I was catching fushys ong b4 that product was invented so me starts tinking was it indeed te product or my expirience/knowledge that hooked the fishy ?????

Ewe've by wot I've seen have gotten to the stage where ewe can find & catch fushy's & I'll bet my short & curleys without the aid of scents BUT you've convinced yourself it's the scents that lure the fish in.

And I believe tha's a false sense of security

Years on the water have taught me a thing or Tu esp these days with sites such a seabreeze being pretty accurate with their predictions

Ewe want a real hot session then watch the pressure systems they'll indicate barrametric rises & falls or in laymans terms the old saying

Calm B4 the storm knowledge like that is wot catch's ewe the fishys not smearing your lures with BRUT 33 hysterical.gif

It's definitely not the scent that attracts the fish. It's the blade itself that does that. I remember one session in particular, every cast had bream follow the blade to your feet. This happened about 5-6 times before I smeared some Ultrabite on and I didn't even have to hop it 3 times before a bream picked it up and I was on.

There are times when any fish will hit a blade without any scent, i.e. the blade itself is enough. However sometimes the fish (mainly bream) are a bit more tentative and aren't really in a feeding mood and need a little bit extra to tempt them to bite. Fish like flathead will eat anything though, don't need scent for them.

Aha ! @ last I'm getting through to ewe so we've determined @ this point it's not the cent now lets question the Blade Lure shall we

OK do ewe think it's the actual lure OR your retrieve that attracts the fishys ?????

I'l help ewe out here

We'll take Joey as an example cause he asked the original Q

If I put the top of the range rod & reel in his hands, gave him a few blades & a bottle of scent & said to him go catch me a Brimski

Do ewe think he could catch me my dinner ??????????

I think probally not

See in my view it's not the tackle that catch's fish, all tackle is, in my view is an extention of the fisherman & the anglers ability to find fish then entice them to strike

Your initial reply here was actually very good & informative then ewe went & stuffed it up mentioning the scent

Wun of the reasons I mock peeps on forums is because they keep repeating wots getting passed rom wun forum to another tha really pee's me off so I make fun off them hysterical.gif

I also quite enjoy having intellegent debates with peeps in regards to fushing or anything else as long as they use their noggins & think about wot they are saying & not repeating the Bullshite that gets passed from wun thread to another.

If ewe take note whenever I give advice to any bloody I'll always give reasons as to why & lt that person decide for themselves whether wot I said was logical or bullshite.

There's many ways fushy's can be caught so 2 or 3 peeps can all be correct but a GooDarus fisherman will get a feed every trip nt just recall the wun magic day

If fush aren't in the feeding mood then scent wont help @ all nor will anything else ewe just have to wait them out, all it takes is a slight more run in the tide & all of a sudden they're chewing theirs heads off.

Last saturday was a god example I can tel just by looking @ the sounder & how the schools appear which species they are on the sounder, saw the snapper but it took sumting like 1/2 hr for them to start chewing even though our cubes had reached them ong B4 tha.

A bit harder if yo're walking the shore & casting but if fushing structure like whaves give me a handfull of pilly to burley up the brimski's tan the use of scent any any I''l keep them around & get them in a feeding frensy in no time I do it out of the bat fushing mooings then just flick very lightly weight SP's to them.

OK how to catch a bream on a blade.
1. Get a blade. They all work, just pick one that you like. For me the Strike Pro's and Ecogear ZX range are pretty good. TT's are good, and cheap too.
2. Find the bream. Not too hard really.
3. Use the right retrieve. By far I have found a slow lift and pause the best retrieve.

Now if that doesn't work, chuck some scent on the lure. It might not make the slightest difference. But it certainly doesn't hurt and can, on some occasions, turn looker fish into takers. The fish aren't always in a feeding mood either (for many reasons), especially if your like me and don't burley to get them in a feeding mood or wait around until they decide to bite.

P.S. I don't use burley out of choice, I know it would probably make fishing easier but I prefer the challenge of chasing fish in the state they are when I come across them.

Well that's personal choice as I said earlier there's many different ways fush ca be caught

BUT bear in mind lure fushing is just an alternative it will ever rank up there with bait fushing if bait fushing is done right
There's always the exeption to the rule flathead are the best example lures will outfish baits for them

Bait fushing is my choice but I dont mind a bit of lures flicking just to cange things around

For me it's not about just catching as many fish as possible by any means possible. I like the challenge of using lures. No bait, no burley. It's more satisfying for me to catch a fish on a lure as opposed to on bait.

Went out today for an hour and tossed a popper and a blade around the flats and ramp at Gunnamatta. Got lots of follows from small whiting and bream but no hookups. Did hook into something heavy, which came in very slowly and was right on the limit to snap the line. Hooked it on a blade lure. It was a 10ft long snatch strap. hysterical.gif
