How long do you guys + Gals like your rods. Also What sort of taper for differant situations.

I ask this because I have spent to much on my 4x4 and im trying to scrap up money for my qld trip next month and more,
and i need a rod for my BTR4500 cause I destroyed the old one.

I have a 8ft Uglystik that needs some new runners so im wondering if you think its too long? It is a 4-8kg Rod, and ill probably run some
8kg Mono on it for use out of JB and Batemans.

Chad the most popular size rods are 5'6,,6',,6'6, and 7' But it depends on what you prefer for yourself, if you use soft plastics most rods are 6'to 7' I am a big man but I prefer to use 4' to5' rods generally in ranges from 2kg to 5kg my favourite estuary or river outfits are 4' 2kg to 3kg or 4'6 3kg to 5kg I will use line generally 2kg to 5kg MONO and I have a Ball using them. my recommendation for your 8ft ugly stik is to rig it with 10kg mono on your 4500 and use it for Barra or Kingies, if up the reef it would be ok for GT's and Spaniards, otherwise leave both rod and reel at home.

I'm a fan of longer fishing rods. Don't really like using anything shorter than 5'6" for all of my applications.

Well this is a fine topic that we have here then.

You did not specify for a boat or land base. Here is the assume.

Since I have been mainly a land base fisherperson I find that 12 foot rods are the go for me. The ones that I use are very light and fast taper. When I have a fish on I allow the rod to do the work. I have other rod that I also use from the shoreline but these are generally longer than 8 foot.

When I am fishing from a boat this is an easy answer I have one 7 foot rod that I use. It is easy because I only have one rod to choose from. Very light and again fast taper.

I am only fishing from the river so I do not have a need for a stiff game fishing rod.

I should also mention that I have a 14 foot rod that I have yet to use in any type of fishing, beach or rock. I picked up for a song as it had one broken runner and that was easy to replace. It is just that it took me quite a long time to get around to doing it.

The way I see it, you can use 7 foot rods for beach work. I have a 30lb, 11ft rod that i plan to (in the future) use for spinning up kings from the rocks on gars. I'll probably get busted off more times than I can count since when spinning KINGFISH, they can make pretty short work of 30lb line, and from the rocks there's no shortage of sharp objects. But I'll give it a shot. I think the plateau around long roof is good? If anyone has some good LBG rockfishing king spots around Sydney please tell?.... biggrin.gif

Even 6ft is pretty short for me. I have a 6'6" rod, but the butt is only 1 inch long, which means I only have about 2 inches less of blank than a 7 foot rod.

I'm a long rod person find you have more contoll with them around the 7 ft mark

Having said that if using a baitcaster then down to a 6 ft rod easier to cast

Hey Cristos, I'm not that good a singer so I have to pay for my rods, maybe thats why I started using shorter one's , They were probably Cheaper. besides I wouldn't know which song I would sing.

Singing a song would be nice if I can sing. So here comes a song.

I have a friend that has the ability to locate bargains. I followed my friend to this bait and tackle shop that he had located in Rose Bay (Sydney, NSW). This shop is no longer there and I can not tell you where they have moved to. They had a bin full of rods that had some damaged to them. I went through the bin and I found this 14 foot rod, that I thought I should be able to fix. I am not sure but I think that I paid $20.00 – $30.00 dollars for this rod. And under 5 dollars for the runner. I did take a chance but it was only a small amount to pay.

Normally you would pay over $200.00 for a good quality 12 foot rod. You can purchase cheaper rods and expect them to be less than perfect.

This same friend many years ago had purchased a composite rod made from graphic and some other materiel. He was fishing for Kingfish off the rocks, again many years ago and after catching one he was trying to land the fish a little higher. His rod had exploded and turned to dust. I think that he had too many scratches on the rod and it had cracked and went back to its original state. I was not there so I did not see this happen just that what he told me after wards. rolleyes.gif

Now being a person that has a fish just at the waters edge, just needed to reach out and grab the fish he did what all of us would do. Kick the bloody fish back in the water.

Back to the story of the 14 foot rod. It is a very light rod and not made from wrap fiberglass. Then I should expect this to disintegrate, Let us hope that I catch one fish before that happens.

From where I fish from normally (from the rocks) I have seen people fish with the short rod of about 5 foot. Now I know that is wrong. They have to use a heavier sinker just to get some distance. If the wind is behind me even better I do not even have to cast smaller sinker and just toss the bait in the air the wind does the rest.

Let us talk about the 7 foot rod from the boat. My only short working rod. I needed one but as I do not have a boat only access to Majed boating scene. At the time that I acquired this rod I was in the right place at the right time. It had a price ticket of $139.00 and I was lucky enough to get this on a raffle. I am happy with the feel and action that I am getting out of this.

I think I should stop here as this is turning out to be a concert.

Some thing that I should mention is that we will as fisher persons destroy our equipment. It normally happens as a matter of time and wear and tear. We can only hope that we are getting use out of them before going to buggery. biggrin.gif

I have had great experience with light tackle this year.

I don't think i would go back to large rods. I now mainly use rods 6ft or smaller...

Majed ewe must not Large or Big Rods with what the topic is about

I know whwt you mwant by your reply

To give you an example you can get say a 3kg rod in lengths of 5 , 6 , 7 foot etc all with basically the same action

What you are refering to is how heavy a rod is & line class it's ued for & thats a completely different story.

When you get say a rod blank & I'm only refering to blanks cause I have a habit of building up the odd one or 2 tongue.gif

I can start off with a 7ft blank & cut it down to a say a 6ft rod without hibering it's action @ all or very very little this is done by cutting off from the butt of the blank.

Now if I wanted to beef up that same blank I would cut from the tip this will stiffen the tod but will also effect it's action a great deal depending on how much I cut off

If you have a mate in the game get him to replace your guides and cut the butt down at the same time to a 6'6"
