Full Version: My Thoughts On Expending This Great Site
Fishing oz style > Chat > Have your say
hustler57
hey fellow fishos,

Its seems that we all agree on 1 thing and that is that we all wanna expend this site and show the world just how great this place really is and that every person who is a member here and every person who joins as a member has something to offer to this great site,

while i do not know of the daily expenses of running this site are , i do know how to run a successfull business as i have done so many times in the past, as im sure many members here as done also ,

i trully believe that to increase the membership of this site is thru advertising, i think we should look at getting stickers made up to put on our boats,

from where i see it , a fisho would not really come home from fishing and do a google or yahoo search for a forum because he or she wants to join one, and lets face the facts there are many other forums out there , hence we should look at them as competition,

i believe that if a fisho is sitting in there boat fishing and they see another boat cruise past or if they cruise past another boat ad lets face it we all check out other boats, if they see a boat with a sticker on the side that reads FISHING-OZ-STYLE.COM.AU or something of that way. they will remember that and hence when they return home they will check out the site to see what FISHING-OZ-STYLE.COM.AU is and then they can decide if they wanna join or not,

i believe that 2 decent sized stickers for us to put on the side of our boats would not break our budget, i for 1 would be happy to pay for a sticker to go on the side of my boat to advertise this great site, the people who we want to attract to this site are the mums and dads and guys and girls who are out there fishing the water ways , what better way for us to all give something back to this site then by advertising on our boats the adress of this site and show that we us fishing oz style members that we are proud to be members of this site,

if we as members can not show that we are proud to be a member of this site , then how can we show other fishos that they should be a member as well,

another way to also look at advertising is as some of you may be aware that there is a fishing talk back show on the radio each saturday and sunday morning from 4 am on a certain am radio station, and i listen in every sat and sun and they often as the public to call in and give out fishing information and fishing reports, why dont we contach them and provide them with fishing reports on the basis that we can link our website to theres and vice versa. and get them involved and get them to be a member of this great site.

any way fellow fishos lets all put our minds together and show the world that a great fishing community is not far away .

as always

tight lines
Spudly
Agree on the sticker's mate, but we might need more here to keep people, at the moment we have a handful of frequent members. Ill pay for a few stickers for my (dads!) boat and my ute.
Spudly
hey hustler. we will all put our reports on here, and every sat/sun you can call up and give the:

FISHING OZ STYLE Weekly Report:
This Week, A jumpas Goodarus was spotted on forshore avenue, possibly spawning [smile.gif]
And anything else that we have posted?

As long as they let us put our name in there?

Possibly we could compile the reports and email them in? We have some accredited people on our site
who are known around the traps so they know we are not all a bunch of mugs... like myself ;)

your on mate i will take 2 large ones for the goat and 2 smaller ones for the 4BY biggrin.gif B) biggrin.gif B)

ok fellow fishos , as soon as i get the ok from admin on this site i will contact the radio station and try to organise something with them,

also if any 1 can come up with some ideas of how the sticers should look and what size we want them to be , i will take some ideas of styles and what size we want to a few places and get some prices, just need the ok from management of this site and styles and size of the stickers,
Jumpus GooDarus
Probally not a bad idea hustler the stickers BUT for them to work you really need the boat to be on the water for peeps to see & it would help if you return to the ramp with a decent haul of fish to arouse peeps interest.

You also have to remember not all fisho's own or know how to use a computer either & I've been around on the net long enough to know only a very small minority of peeps actually even post, they'll visit look & say nothing.

I'm currently redoing up my little boat & it will be getting a new paint job as well I never had a name on it prior & decided to name it this time around it will be called

Jumpus'n

After my adopted user name I'll add Fishing-oz-style under it & see what sort of response I get.

As far as attracting new members etc you have to remember it's winter peeps shut down from fishing & boating this time of the year they dont know any better cause this is my favourite time of year to fish & will be doing so as soon as the Goats finished

ps] moving this thread to appropriate forum

Stickers I like the idea , but they would need to be something that stands out. Maybe a competition on the forum would bring some life to both. Could even put it up at MM.

I've been on the PM wagon with hustler *La Vista Baby* tongue.gif & told him that I thought the stickers would be better stuck on the trailers than on the boat

Reason being trailers are parked & people will see the sticker unlike on the boats your trailer is @ the ramp car park & anyone walking by will see it.

What I'll be doing is making my own as a test out there's a reflective material that I've got so sticker will also serve as a safety feature of a night time any light whatso ever hits it, it will glow

Here's an example of what I'm talking about buggered if I was going to pay Yamaha $600 for stickers so I made them myself

But we ain't .com.au we are .info as the other is like $70aud per year to register alone and .info was only $10.00 aud

but I like the idea see what you can catch at www.Fishing-oz-style.info

Have just found a new domain provider can get .com.au fo $38.00 for 2 years

Hello

Stickers are ok but my dad thinks it might be putting the horse in front of the cart.
Stickers are a more feel good thing for the person with the sticker but it all helps its part of the over all marketing plane.
He said a good no cost way to promote the site would be to have every active member send an invitation to everybody in there address book even if they don’t like fishing they might know somebody that does or they might like cooking fish or jokes etc so beef up the non fishing stuff as well as the fishing things to create interest and ask every person they send it to if they could please help and send the invitation to the site to every body in there address book even if they don’t like fishing. Like a chain letter dad has been in media sales and marketing for over 15 years if that count thanks.

Prawnstar ! we already have that option on this site

Whoops just as well that I checked its gone

Hey Oz what happened to it ???

I Still think all you guys are missing the key factor which is only a small minority of people ever bother to post & I think we do very well here for the small group that we are, just have a look @ the more established sites SF for example @ any given time if you look @ their stats there's up to 150 people logged in viewing the site & none of them post just like here it's only the regulars who post & the same goes with any site on the web & I'm not just talking about fishing forums either.

My personal view & I've said it time & time again & I'm sticking to it is that you need Threads of interest to incite new members to post.
These threads can be a varioty of topics even asking what you may think is a silly question will get people posting.

You all have to remember the majority of guests here & on any other board are noobs to fishing most likely looking for some info of sorts the more threads we have the more people will visit & hopefully stay & post.

Which brings me to another good point I know I fart arse around with my threads calling Kingfish KUNG FU FUSH etc etc guess I'll have to be a bit more wary of this when naming a thread reason being nobody types in KUNG FU FUSH into their search engine when searching for info.

Here's a good example for you's to be able to relate to type Jumpus GooDarus into your seach engines & watch what comes up it will bring you back to this site & my posts back @ SF.

In other words choice your thread titles with the thought that a key word will attract visitors google or yahoo will pick up on them & list them in your search.

Like I've already said time & time again we can do everything to attract new members but it's another thing getting them to post hustler thinks advertising is the way to go ?

Well I dont I had & ran a buisness for 12 years got conned into advertising one year & what a waste of money that was all I got was people ringing wasting my time asking for a price well I never advertised again after that.

Again it all falls down to what you're trying to sell @ present we have very little & the best option is basically what Prawnstar has suggested there's a better chance someone will post if they already know someone here rather than trying to get someone posting who has just stumbled across the site via a search.

The Pyramid is a proven technique but if you really think advertising is the way to go then forget about the Telephone or television there's a much better way to go

All fixed.
Spudly
just emailed my address book, hopefully get a few mates on
might get them keener to come fishing with me!

Do we have a 4x4/hunting/camping section... would always help as they go hand in hand with fishing
jasonb
you could allways have a links section for the 4x4s and hunting ,ill have a couple of stickers but they need to be about 2 foot long ,for my new boat
Jumpus GooDarus
Well I was @ my old signage guys workshop 2day getting some reflective paper & inquired about stickers OK for 1000 mm X 1300 mm sheet cost is $100 & thats on the better 5 year paper not the cheap stuff & it comes laminated as well roughly translated around $3 . 50 per sticker if you were to go the size oz suggested.

Mind you that price does not included art work but that's a piece of cake all I have to do is burn it to disk & give it to him, advantage of this is we can have a multitude o artwork for example those who live out bush & fish freshwater can have say a bass, trout as the theme image, those who Gamefish likewise etc etc.

By doing the artwork can play around with sizes as well I've given it a bit more thought & dont think stickers on boats will be that crash hot !

I'll ask one simple question here ? How many times do you guys on average take your boats out ???????????????????
Spudly
Ill put a sticker on the back of the ute, on the trailer and the boat. Our boat is in the water at least once a month during summer, probley more this coming summer.

Ill put a sticker on the front window of my mates dive shop smile.gif
hustler57
well ive been running dry for a while now, , but normally during winter id say the boats in the water every 2nd week and during summer the boats in the water about 2 times week, i agree we should put them on the trailers but i still reckon we should also be able to put them on our boats, i think it should be up to the member to decide where we put them.

what about colours ??????

id need a deep red or maroon if its possible and id take 5 stickers , 2 for the trailer , 2 for the boat and 1 for the car

Prawnstar said it. I am a product of Majed sending me the link. It is that simple. I am still finding my way around the site. This is normal as many people need to be comfortable before voicing their voice!

I will take a sticker. It is just that I do not have a boat and so it will have to go on the Backpack or Bucket. I do most of my fishing rock hopping.

I actually was looking @ my little goat 2day after doing the pin striping & name dont really know if I want a sticker there to be honest so I took a snapshot of a pic to see what it would look like.

What do you guys think ????????????

Yes Christos !

You'll find everybody here who has bothered to post either got sent a link from somebody allreadt here or they do know somebody here.

I've yet to see any new member come across this site by accident & post futhermore I think if the stickers are going to work & there's a very good chance they will it's because someone has seen your boat for example @ the ramp & you've had a chat, or even if you didn't have a chat they may very well say hello if they come across a pic of the boat etc looking through the threads.
Mully
Just a quick note ,,print up some flyers get your members to print them out also maybe post a thread with the link to the flyer for downloading...Go walkabout and stick these on every free community notice board around the place, shopping centers, boat ramp info boards[most will let you if asked]and if you go jogging or walking in the day or evening drop a few off to houses with visable boats or caravans these peolpe are your targets....My new site is around a month old and i have around 70 members the other had around 500 but i chopped most of the non posters as they are a waste of space [[sorry but true]] if your not active why have the numbers id rather have 70 posters than 5000 with 70 real contributors.
Links, links links exchange everywhere you can its free and it works....
ask your local tackle shop to put a flyer up also most don't have a problem especially if you plug their shop in a trade section or the like...

anyways just a few ideas that worked for me .
oz man
Well said Mully , and if you need help in hosting etc just yell.I,m the computer geek of these lot and do all the necessary mods and thing .
I run 6 other sites and have a small hosting company.
I love fishing just don't get the time. cry_smile.gif
Jumpus GooDarus
It all still gets back to whats of interest on this or any site to keep peeps visiting or dare I say posting.

Still have to face the fact which I believe that only 1 or 2 % of visitors will ever post if that.

Most who do register only do so to scam email address's to spam & I've deleted peob about 500 such accounts it's slowed down a bit of late cause of all the ban filters but I can still see them trying to register but cant get through.

I personally know alot of fisho's & link to here was given to them not to mention link being printed in fishing clubs newsletters etc & till this day I have not seen one person register from any of that stuff.

I do however believe they visit but thats about it.
Mully
The thing is every site has a feel to it,some are friendly some are more distant. Its a niche area forums especially fishing forums...
The most members i have picked up would be from pin ups at community boards a lot of people with time on their hands visit these places . I created a poll on this very subject to monitor where they were coming form eg,,,did you see us 1.pin up 2,advertising material 3,links 4 and so on gives you and idea where to push ...
People will post and visit if they feel comfortable,i send out a lot of emails telling people not to be shy and post just to be part of the group some take notice some don't but every bit helps...
Im no advertising guru, but these ideas do work they may not send masses but every extra regular is worth gold to a site.Because these people make it worth while visiting...

Another thing that works is a random new member prize, you randomly pick a new member that contributes to the forum and send a small prize like a door prize say once a fortnight...Its good for the member and the sponsor or prize givers get free plugs also..
Jumpus GooDarus
Mully we're what you might call a breakaway site here haven't been up that long & prob got started @ not such a good time either leading up to winter when not as much interest in fishing is about.

Most of us here used to post @ a bigger sire which used to delete anything which didn't suit their sponsors or the Moderators

If you notice there's no Mods on this site only oz & me & I've only had to delete the odd post all I ask here is here is for members not to swear @ ithers in an abusive manner.

You've prob allready noticed we tend to take the piss out of one another here & there's nothing wrong with that it's something you'd do anywhere in normal life & just have one thing to say about that if you're gonna dish it then be able to take it.

Mind ewe it's a bit unfair here cause all these mimkompoopy's tend to gang up on me for some unknown reason laugh.gif laugh.gif

Mate as far as sponsors & prize's etc go there are some threads about on the matter but like I said in those I have no probs getting sponsers can have them right away but wont all in good time.

But like I've said on many a time all the publicity in the world wont keep peeps here posting unless you give them threads /topics of interest to keep them here as you know the net is full of fishing forums & I'll tell ewe what we dont do to bad compaired to most of them considering the shoutbox takes away alot from the forums.

All you basically need is another 20 oe so new members like yourself who are willing to put their 2 bobs worth in & post in the forums & this place will rock we get the visitors but not the posters & same goes on any board only a select few actually post
Mully
Very true regarding the larger forums allowing you to make comments about sponsors or equipment that might shine away from their little deals behind the scenes and trust me I know what goes on behind closed doors...I too started with this in mind but isn't it funny how the sheep wont change from the monotonous posting and blabble,ok some do have good topics but everything is censored not to mention some mods think their professionals at fishing lol many could be beaten by my 3 year old.
Sites like this forum need more support, the break away from the standard B/S ,getting it is another matter all together....
But you look at the members 5000 members and maybe 40 regular posters thats pretty bad odds thats including the 20 mods and best buddys behind the scenes.
Every forum needs a mod but how the mod operates dictates a good or bad forum,,on my site [sorry if this is inappropriate] the tackle retailers and suppliers know they may get good or bad feedback and if they don't like this then bad luck I wont suck up to anyone some of their gear is crap and some is great take the good and bad and deal with it.believe it or not once you break the ice soooo many will pop their heads up and think far out we can actually make a honest opinion.

What you are doing here is great its what I strive for also,Again this is just my observation im no guru as I always state but ive been around the traps....Your site will grow for sure but the wait will kill you lol...
hustler57
now im no media sales advertising expert, and i must say ive havnt picked up my fishing rods in almost 6 months, way to busy at work, but i will say this,

what is the sites targeting market ?
who do we want as members ?
where do we find those members ?

we target families/fisher persons
and any 1 who enjoys the outdoors,

now i really dont think it matters how many people join and dont make a post because im sure the mods, hehehe can put a program into place that deletes a member if they dont log onto the site in a certain time period, ie- if they dont log on for at least 6 months they are automatically deleted,

just because a new member doesnt make a post doesnt mean that they dont like the site and dont find the site to be interesting,
