Need some goodarus advise!!!
Went down to Bermi and bought the 1/2 cab back to give it some well needed attention.
My mate down there recons there's something wrong with it and noone down that way
wants to touch it because of the warranty plan I have, they say it's too hard to get paid
for what they do,,, Consequently my mate has refused to use it for the past 7 months and
has just left it sitting in a paddock in the weather.
Anyhow I now have it at home and was going to start it before I take it back to the bloke
who I bought the motor off and fitted the motor etc and who I bought the 12 months nation
wide warranty off.
Fresh fuel and cleaned out water seperator filter and charged battery and away we go,, or so I thought.
The motor has been on full tilt and the travel lock mech has been holding the weight of the motor up.
I have to raise the tilt a fair bit before I can release the travel bracket, and tried to do this both with
the control tilt switch and also the tilt switch that's on the motor itself.
All I get is the motor making a noise like it's working, but it's not lifting the motor at all.
I placed a jack under the motor and tried lifting it that way but it seems to want to lift the
whole boat,,, not enough angle to lift motor itself.
Now the motor sounds like it want's to work, so probably just needs bleeding ?.
How long can I keep my finger on the tilt up button before I do some other damage ?
So far only been doing it for about 5-10 seconds, as I remember burning my ignition module out
on my 40 hp by holding the start switch too long.
Will take some photos when I charge my camera batterys.
Which cylinder is up and which is down ?.
Motor is 98 90hp Johnson ocean runner.

If it's not moving in 5-10 seconds there is a problem Nimrod.
Possible problems.
Pump coupler
Hydraulic pump
Fluid level
Fill it up with ATF and try it again.
Make sure the manual release valve is closed just in case someone else has played with it.

Bloody typical of anything I buy, is not the same as any other model.
I've spent 1 hour looking at all the different Johnson 90 hp models 97-98 and none of them have the same model number as mine.
Looked at the exploded view of all the tilt/trim devices and they all show a single push rod, where mine has two. They are the same except for this difference.
Manual release valve fully closed, I'm tipping it's empty of fluid as I found a tiny leak when I try to use the trim, so probably leaked out over the past 7 months.
Can't find the filler hole, there is a release valve and o ring at the bottom of the resovior but don't want to fiddle with this in case it's not a filler hole.

hi frank, my yammy would do the same thing after sitting for a wile, don't ask me how but it would get air in the system and I would have to bleed it to get it going again.

The model number will tell us exactly which one it is then you can look it up on the BRP website.
The fill hole will be at the top of the reservoir facing backwards.
Get the number and go

Look for the numbers stamped into a welsh plug on the top of the block.

You could also look at a few 90HP motors at BRP around the right year.
BTW, if you enlarge the drawings a bit then you can click on the part and it will scroll down to the description.

Had a look at the site I used when fixing my motors Frank, I looked at all the exploded diagrams and this is the only one with what seems to be 2 pistons.

That's the same drawing I found it the BRP site Storms, I'm surprised Frank didn't see it.
If you do need to undo the manual release valve Frank don't open it more than a turn & a half, there's a circlip that retains it.
The TILT ram is the long skinny one & the TRIM ram is the short fat one.
I've got the older 3 ram system but the principles will all be the same.
If you trim up & put it on the mechanical locking levers then tilt down for a bit the TRIM ram will retract back into the cylinder, then if you want to tilt up to release the levers you will find the TILT ram won't move until after the TRIM ram has fully extended.
Sounds a bit confusing I know but look at the short fat TRIM ram and see if it's moving or extended while you're trying to tilt up.

Thanks Fed and all others that replied. I did see that drawing and that's what I say about mine having 2 rams where all the diagrams only show 1 ram. The resovior doesn't have a filler cap as such and I'm thinking it's the lower round plug type device with a screw slot in it that i will have to read up on and see how to fill it.
KKW sent me a terrific detailed email with all that I should need, just gotta get around to reading it.
Sat up till 4.30 this morning watching rain fall on the F1 track at Canada before I decided to look up the results this morning.
I will try and get out there today some time if there's a break in the weather and see if I can do something with it.
Thanks again for all the help .

Now I'm confused Frank.
My older evinrude has 3 rams, 2 for trim & 1 for tilt.
The one in Storms link (1997) shows 2 rams, 1 for trim & 1 for tilt.
That's counting ALL the rams, are you only counting the trim rams (short fat ones)?
I can see some sheep jokes coming.

Fed. Yes mate sorry about the confusion, 3 rams in total, 1 long one for tilt and 2 for trim, with the motor on it's travel bracket and no fluid ( guessing ) in system the large tilt ram won't lift the motor high enough so I can release the towing bracket.
Click to view attachmentClick to view attachmentIs this where you fill the resovior ? and how far do you undo the screw, and what will fall out of it when undone?
I will also have to clean and paint the trim motor as well before it rusts right out.

its a worry frank, with all that rust I would be thinking what's it like inside, if it were me I would pull it off and have the hole thing rebuilt that's if you are going to keep the boat .
what's the rest of the motor like ????????????????????????????????????????

That's the filler Frank, going by the BRP website that's a 1990 motor or older, 1991 and later had 2 rams in total.
You take that plug all the way out and fill it up.
Those motor housing always rust up I think it's because the make them out of mild steel due to the permanent magnets inside for the motor. Wire brush and a strip of emery cloth to get around the back of it then some white killrust.
You would be surprised Poly, the motor is probably like new inside.

Fed. the motor is a ocean runner, they came out about 96-97 or so the compliance plate says it's 97
complies to 1998 whatever that means.
As i said before, not unusual for me to get something that is somehow different to the norm
The welsh plug says G4402340 .
Poly it's only surface rust mate a rub back and proper prep and paint will be OK.
The motor itself is fully rebuilt and everything is like brand new all wiring and stuff has been fully renewed.
My mate tells me that the powerhead base gasket was never fitted correctly and there is a problem with the reed/leaf valve, otherwise motor is perfect, just lack of looking after it for the past 7 months or so, it hasn't been started in all that time and has been left sitting in a paddock.
Don't know why I bother, but it's good when I want to go down there and have a boat waiting for me.
2 boats down there was just silly so bringing one of them home to stay.

What I think I will do is use the manual release valve ( port side of motor bracket ) and manually lift the motor clear of the support so I can lower the motor to start it etc, then manually lift it and when ready take it to my mechanic I bought it from and let him worry about getting it to work properly.
Just a couple of shots to show the condition of the old girl.

Frank - don't suppose you want to swap trim motors?
I think I really do need to replace the housing.

You're right frank it's definitely a later model, who knows it may have even had a earlier model T&T unit put in it or they could be rebadged Zukes or something.
Buggered if I know I can't even keep up with Ford & Holden models anymore.
That model number means nothing in the OMC code up to & including 1998.

Sorry Frank, I gathered from your earlier posts it was a two cylinder set-up, missed the dual ram bit.
It is hard to work out the Australian models when checking the model numbers on websites-my 96 30hp johno which was a aus model had a totally different model number to its US equivalent. I got some great help from the guys at marine scene in Campbelltown, might be a option for you if you have any trouble with your guy. Another possibility is Arizona Outboards for a replacement tilt/trim assy-good guys have used them a lot years ago.

Going over to see my mechanic today and see when he can fit it in to do it.
I'm not gonna worry about it any more just let him fix it under the warranty he sold me, and if there is any problems about fixing it under warranty I will start bad mouthing his business through the biggest fishing and boating forums in Australia, his name will be shit and I will let him know it.
