Yep worth doing, I have made home made lures out of all sorts of objects, my favorite for trout would you believe is a used cigarette filter, the trout can't resist them.
I have given up the fags now and wouldn't handle the stinking things these days, but for smokers, you should try them one day.
Just throw a used filter into the water and you will see the trout attacking it.
A bit of torn rag off a old shirt or anything will catch fish.
