Danny. There's no law that says you must do it and I am not having a shot at you , just trying to give a little bit of educated advise.
When you place a fish ( especially a head shaking type fish ) it is best if you can place your hand through the strap and use one hand on the grips only ( don't swap hands while fish in water ) what can happen is the fish gives a few powerful head shakes and pries the grips from your grasp.
This is not only a loss of a pair of lip grips but the poor fish has to swim around with them clipped to it's lip forever more.
Might never happen, but it could.
