Recently given a raider snapper light rod for chrissy and noticed the the top guide is slighty offset to the second from top. By that I mean when you look down the rod from the reel to the tip all the guides line up and the very top one is set back slighty. Is this normal? Does anyone have a reason for why this might be done. To me it seems like it would cause friction but as these rods are meant to be designed by Ian Miller maybe I'm missing the point. Anyone got any ideas?

no it dose not sound right to me, but j.g. will have a better idea on the rights and wrongs of the thing.

Sorry maybe I shouldve described it better. All the runners are in a line down the rod so they arent in a spiral like some rods. what I mean is that when you look down the rod from the reel to the tip they are all in line however the tip is for want of a better term closer to the rod. the tip doesnt stick out as far as the second from top which to mean creates drag. oOOOOO excuse the bad diagram but see how the big (O) lines up and the littel one doesnt. The only reason i ask is that all my other rods the tip line up with the others so the line feeds out without friction.

If you mean the tip ring's DIAMETER is smaller, i.e. the guide itself is smaller, then they are designed that way. Don't know why, they just are.

He gets paid a royalty fee by Shimano to use his name on the rods.

Cant say I've ever bothered picking up & having a good looky @ the raider rods so cant comment to much about them

If the rod ewe have has got the single foot guides ewe've prob just bent the odd wun out by accident , gently bend it back to re-align with the others

Sounds like a bit of false advertising to me. When the tag says designed by Shimano and Ian Miller one would assume both of them had a hand in designing it.

You've got them calling plain old plastic Carbon bodied reels best wun I herd was Daiwa coming up with Zion Technology on their reels it's just plain old plastic with a new name.

Then you've got those lure twits out there claiming that this lure is better than that lure when in fact all the lure come out of the same mould & factory just packaged different with different brand names.

In the case of the raider rods @ around $120 or wotever they sell for Shimano hae taken an ordinary rod which I dont think even has the Fuji gear gear on it [i'll check when next I look @ wun] Added Ian Millers name to the rod & even after paying him a royalty are still making a small fortune on them.

It's the Ian Miller name that's selling them

Oh & you'll find there's a very good chance the rods aren't even made by Simano just ordered from a rod building factory in China

Unfortunately its a gift so taking it back is not an option as the missus was the giver, however I am in the mood for trying out my first baitcaster rod and reel so I'll be sure to get some advice of you mate. You sound like you know you stuff. My opinion of shimano has diminished somewhat.

i'm just a bit of a tackle nut & know wot I want in a rod the average angler wouldn't know the difference between a top of the line rod or the bottom of the range.

All blanks have a different action & taper depending on te type of fushing ewe want to d those who specialise in a specific type of fushing know exactly wot rod they want the average Joe Blow dosn't & relies on the check out chicks @ he local tackle store.

Unfortunately that's wot the large majority of staff @ tackle sops are Plain Old Check Out Chicks cause their knowledge of fushing tackle is influenced by the reps who visit the stores.

There's rods t bait fush with & there's rods to toss lures with but even the novice will feel the difference if a good balanced outfit was put in their hands to use

So how does a relative novice get some good advice. When I read reviews of things you get mostly complementary ones few really slag off the big companies. What tackle stores should I be aware of. Im living in sydney on the northern side. you guys sound like there are some who are just plain dodgy.

As for Tackle, its best to talk to people who use the gear alot.. Tackle stores will always try and sell you whats built up in the shop or the latest fad thats making them money!

There are some peoiple on here who will help with gear if your after somthing for a specific purpose.. Just dont listen to that jumpy one cause he tells the biggest porky's!!

What sort of fishing do you do and what are you after in your gear is the best place to start..

Biggest thing is despite whatthe so called experts and shops will tell you, you DO NOT NEED expensive reels to catch your basic fish.. I hate more than anything people saying that you need a stella and a custom rod to catch a bream!! BS!!!

Joey, I'v got a raider 2 estuary spin, all fuji components on the rod-what the quality of fuji compared to others in this price range would be comparible anyways. Good rod, solid in the butt, plenty of whip in the tip for light lure casting. Mine was fine new but over time has needed a little guide adjustment as any rod does to keep everything lined up.
Don't want to stir shit but JG why would miller have quotes in the 2009 brochure saying the changes he's made to the raider 2 rods, also same is on the shimano website?, seems funny to me, he's got his name also on the miller signature series and the t-curve range-are these also designed by someone else?

JG here's some info on the Raiders:

I have two of them, one is a 3-5kg Rack Raider, it's also an original. It is AWESOME. I have caught everything on it, and it's tough as anything. The other one is a 5-10kg Series II model, it's Ok. It has serious balls but it's very fast and pretty chunky. I bought it as a heavy plastic rod, but really it's better for jigging or bait. It's quite stiff too.

The guides on the originals are Fuji, not too sure on the new Series II model. I think they are, but I might be wrong.

All I know is that the originals are way better. The original Raiders got a great name as a budget rod that performed well above its price tag. Then Shimano released the "Mexican Fire" Series II which is actually a worse rod, but is trying to use the Raider name to get its sales. They're still a good rod, but are nothing compared to the original.

Like I said earlier in another reply here all your gint names like Daiwa , shimano dont actually build their own rods nor do Co's like Wlson etc etc they all buy from the same factories in china, taiwan [taiwin make the crappiest rods of all keep away from them]

How it works is the rod manufacturers send out samples to the Co's here if they like wot they see then they order them choce of guides, colour etc etc

There's also the choice ewe can remodel a rod by sending it back altering guide spacings length of grips etc etc [I did a few for the viva boys sum time back

Guides are very important in my books as well, stick with rods that carry fuji's the Chi Nee guides are not up to scratch they tarnish velly quickly & make the rod look crappy in no time.

As far as action goes on a rod ??

Have seen alot of rods on the market that look great with all the flucy winch's, grips etc etc but the blank action leaves alot to be desired

If choosing a spin rod whi it as your tossing a lure dont use your arm, wrist the flick & watch the tip action if it's whippy up te tip without the whole rod bending you've got a pretty good blank, it will allow you to cast nicely

I was watching that I Fish show on HD1 today if you saw the show & noted that rod Paul Worseman was using ??

That rod had a very nice look to it nice soft tip & plenty of grunt down the bottom 2/3 rd's of the blank
Then they gave a boating tip with sum chickybabe on a fushy with a road thet I wouldn't give to a Jap on ANZAC day it was woefull no lifting power wotsoever & that was plain to see cause all the chicky babe did was stand there & just hold the rod

To me that was a perfect example of wot ewe do not want in a rod

Like I said I'm a bit of a tackle nut think there's around 15 spin outfits alone sitting in the racks all these are only the light spin sticks

Then there's the bait rods & game sticks etc etc

But if ewe want expert advice on a rod to catch Potato Cod ???

Wont go into where my info comes from all I'll say is I spoke with Ian last year sum time when he came up to Sydney

Easy way 2 find out as factory rods dont fix component brands

Have a looky on the winch itself, Fuji have the name moulded into the winches

If the winch says Fuji then the guides will also be Fuji

Wont tell ewe which of the Fuji guides though
