Piggy Back Thread

Headed out yesterday arvo bout 2 for a couple of hours. Very dirty water in the bay at the usual spots so I headed a couple of k's down the coast to a wreck. Berleyed up with bread, pillies and tuna oil for some quick action on various cod and wrasse. Took about an hour for the first snapper to say hi-undersized for a bit on baits so the soft plastics got a few casts for 2 nice snapper just under 40cm-I was using 3/4 oz jig heads and nuclear chicken paddle tail gulps. Caught a couple of trevalley bout the same size on gulp sand worms on same weight jigs with smaller hooks and called it a day as the sun was on its way down and being in my little 14ft 30hp tiller with a good 40min drive back to the ramp.
Back inside the bay and was waved down by a bloke with his mate and daughter who had broken down-was almost dark by now so I towed them in (good karma I reckon) and headed home to cook the fish wrapped in foil with butter, mushrooms and our favurite sauces.....yummo!

Great few hours and the wife was happy as with the fresh fish-our 7mth old son got his first taste of snapper and really enjoyed it.

Was going to go out 2day but after doing a few Ling Lings yeasterday to get updated on wgere all the wittle fishy's were ???

I decided to give it a miss 2day.

Some mates who've been braining the reds last few weeks came up empty handed yesterday complaining about the current

Tis the way it goes ewe have to be out there when the fish are on the chew & I've 4gotten how to fush

I was only bout 3-400m from the rocks and the current suprised me-on my big rod was using a large lump'o'lead to get the bait down and the jigs were getting cast as far north as possible to get them down before starting the retrieve. Spoke to a couple of other fellas out there and they had no luck on reefs further out and pulled in one legal snapper between them drifting near me.

Can be velly mis leading out the front, wasn't there so just speculating, more than often it's just a very strong surfice current giving the mis-illusion cause baits seem to be on the surface when in fact they are getting down.

Either way tis not my idea of enjoyable fushing since I like as wittle lead as possible, when it tis like that out the front I pull pick & mossy a wee bit sth off the green tank into shallower water the reef there rises to 18 meters & it's very rare if ever that I've found a strong current.

Quite the opposite many a time I pull pick from there & go looking for current as I think ewe need some sort of movement in the water

hmm im gonna go off botany bay this weekend ..

jason howed you use the softies ? did you just cast them out and yet them sink and reel in slowy ??


really keen to get out and get some good fish, havent caught anything decent in ages !

You've gotta watch, listen and practice- I'v been getting more into plastics the last few trips out, each situation requires a different approach, the other day I was casting as far up-currant as possible and leaving the bail arm open to let the plastic hit bottom before it was under the boat then I was lifting it maybe 5-10m off the bottom and letting it go back to the bottom then repeating the process. The lighted jig head was getting more hits but the larger jig head and plastic got the better result. Last time out I just let the plastic move up and down while the rod was in the rod holder for similar results.
