Havnt had a fish for a couple of weeks now due to my cracked trailer.
This morning i decided to take the kayak for a peddle out Long Reef.
Was on the water at 6 a.m. and the conditions were perfect for the yak.
Went a couple of km out to a reef i know and anchored up. Fished for about 40 min for nothing then decided to peddle to where one of my mates was who is a pro. I could see him circling a ground which holds Kings in warm months and trevally in the cooler months.
When i finally got there he told me he had only gotten 2 blurters.
I started flicking small plastics around when after 10 min he pulled up a legal King, then another and another.
We were both bloody surprised to find them there.
I quickly changed to the biggest jig head and plastic i had and followed him around. I managed to hook up plenty just under Kings.
My mate came over and threw me some cuttlefish and fresh Slimey. I threw it straight on the jig head and had some great fights but kept getting busted off.
I didnt go prepared for Kings. I only took a real light flick stick with 10 pound line. My plans were for taylor and bream along with some pan reds.
Even the undersize Kings were taking more than 5-7 minutes to land. I had no chance on the big ones cause i couldnt let them run far cause i was only in 9-11 metres of water. My rod was literally bent over so far it was in the water. (Your old rod JG, bloody excellent stick!).
Didnt go home with a fish, but it was still a better day than alot of days when i do take home fish.
Tomorrow i get my trailer back from Frank so hopefully i can get back into fishing out of a quicker means of transport. I felt like Fred Flinstone out there, especially when i saw the thick dark clouds coming over from the west. The kayak was actually planing out of the water!
