Full Version: Yakin' Off Long Reef
Fishing oz style > Fishing Reports > Fishing Reports

Havnt had a fish for a couple of weeks now due to my cracked trailer.
This morning i decided to take the kayak for a peddle out Long Reef.
Was on the water at 6 a.m. and the conditions were perfect for the yak.
Went a couple of km out to a reef i know and anchored up. Fished for about 40 min for nothing then decided to peddle to where one of my mates was who is a pro. I could see him circling a ground which holds Kings in warm months and trevally in the cooler months.
When i finally got there he told me he had only gotten 2 blurters.
I started flicking small plastics around when after 10 min he pulled up a legal King, then another and another.
We were both bloody surprised to find them there.
I quickly changed to the biggest jig head and plastic i had and followed him around. I managed to hook up plenty just under Kings.
My mate came over and threw me some cuttlefish and fresh Slimey. I threw it straight on the jig head and had some great fights but kept getting busted off.
I didnt go prepared for Kings. I only took a real light flick stick with 10 pound line. My plans were for taylor and bream along with some pan reds.
Even the undersize Kings were taking more than 5-7 minutes to land. I had no chance on the big ones cause i couldnt let them run far cause i was only in 9-11 metres of water. My rod was literally bent over so far it was in the water. (Your old rod JG, bloody excellent stick!).
Didnt go home with a fish, but it was still a better day than alot of days when i do take home fish.
Tomorrow i get my trailer back from Frank so hopefully i can get back into fishing out of a quicker means of transport. I felt like Fred Flinstone out there, especially when i saw the thick dark clouds coming over from the west. The kayak was actually planing out of the water!

Yeh, the missus said to stop doing so much fishing and get off my ass and do some excersise. So i killed 2 fish with 1 hook (you like that one, i just made it up biggrin.gif).
Its good when i couldnt be bothered taking the boat out, or when i go away camping with surfer mates. We go camping alot so it comes in handy when i want some 'me' time. The missus got jealous when i got it and complained why i didnt get a tandem one.
She doesnt understand that i go fishing to get away from her!!!
Ha ha, na - shes a good girl. Just like takin the piss with her!

Salty that is a brilliant wittle rod tongue.gif

A bit light to be runing 10 lb line through it but it will handle the line class it's a real good 3 kg stick & dont you worry it's caught it's share of Kungy's B4 you got it.

Dave shat one day when after about 15 minutes I'd worked a Bloody Big Kungy to the boat over 10 kg's but once the Kungy saw Dave's melon & him licking his lips it did the Harold Holt & reefed me laugh.gif laugh.gif

Sounds like you had a good morn out good Onya

BK - if you go to the "lets talk fishing" category and then scroll down to "back from Jervis Bay" about half way down, i have a few pics of the yak there.
Next time i have it all set up i will take some detailed shots of it. Its a bloody good unit, but i still have to do some more modifications.

POLY - The camera i am using is a little RICOH Caplio R4.
I never used to carry a camera until i started with the forums and i saw good shots that people were taking.
I dont know if its any good, my brother in law gave it to me. I only use it for fishing cause i dare take my good one cause ive been known to be a clumsy clutz! Its not easy when you have limited movement on a kayak, have abit of a swell, fighting a fish, trying to dig out the camera, still fighting the fish, and then trying to get a half decent photo!!!
I WILL lose it one day!

Cheers Salty, I'll take a look 22.gif

Well done on your fishing. I also have old Jumpy rods but as yet have not been able to try them out. Work is getting in the way. smile.gif

I am not sure of you going out on a kayak thou. Some big swells and you get wet. Are you wearing a wet suit?

No wetsuit mate
It was pretty calm Chris. The only thing that gets wet is my ankles when i launch.
But i have been out with abit of a wind chop. Sometimes it comes over and gets you alittle, but out in the sun you dry pretty quick.
Christos
I get the same from the rocks. Ankles get wet.

Then you get one that comes up and dumps spray all over you. Just dry off in the sun.

Its awesome, but you have to use the one which has peddles so you use your legs. That way your hands are constantly free to fish.

Ha Ha. Good post mate.
The good thing about where i go is that theres always someone out there. Also i wouldnt go out if the conditions were shi7.
The kayak has good stability, its 750 mm wide at its widest point.
