I though that I might get some feed back on winter fishing.

I know what I do during the winter months. I guess I want to stimulate some conversation on what people think about what happens to fish during winter.

So give me you personal thoughts on winter fishing and what you personally do during this time.




Now I mean personal thoughts so there is no right or wrong answer.

This being my first winter in Oz as a fisherman, I guess I'll have to find out what I'll be doing.

My guess is
1. Get beanie hat
2. Get gloves
3. Get warm fleece sweater
4. Get out my thermal underwear from my ski gear.
5. Practice launching and retrieving without getting my feet wet (I guess I have to learn to drive onto trailer)
6. Target anything that is willing to bite (most likely tailer and salmon from what I have read)

Think peeps pack up their fishing gear in winter & thats a bloody big mistake

Tis my my favourite time of the year to catch fush, just about all the species caught in summer can be caught in the colder months with alot of new ones added to the list.

I agree with jumpy to many people pack it up when in fact the better eating fish are caught in the winter months Kingfish, snapper, albacore tuna and yellowfin tuna (my personal fav to catch)

Its harder to wake up in winter in the morning but the reward can be worth it especially when the y/fin are on and when they get excited are are easier to hook and very challenging on light gear !!! I urge people to give it ago.

Personally i love catching fin and in my experiance the best way is to cubing for them altho it can be trick acctully knowing where the fish are so sumtimes the best way to start is by trolling. And nature is a really good indicator in winter especially with tuna when u see birds working u r usally in the right area u dont need to go to browns mountin always.... they can be at ur door step just watch the birds they are an anglers best friend... try not to be gps fishermen as Jumpy and a group of us discussed at SSAFA last night.

I always use the GPS, wouldn't have a clue how to get my car+boat to the ramp otherwise

all people say in winter is that all you can catch are salmon and tailerand i reakon thats a load of bull, cause like jumpus said it is the best time too fish, in winter i get up around 9ish for a fish on the weekends, i have caught loads of flatties and bream and a few snapper ( near legal like too 29cms) fish gotta eat, they just can not sleep throught the winter can they now .....


and remember fish are friends not food .... i mean fish are food and not friends

I will try my best to get some big winter bream in the coming weeks but I prefer summer for LB breaming. Other options are LB trevally and maybe the odd salmon and tailory to go with it. LB kings are another option but the action won't be as hot as in summer.

indeed very true, we may differ on the need for an early start but to me thats the best time of the day

poly the poly can not melt in winter so you can take the melt o meter off it

I agree with all your points though with number 5 i've devised a great release system that allows me to partly launch the boat & start up the engine before dropping it off the trailer. I'm just perfecting it now before i spread the love...i mean tell you about how it works.
So far ive launched the boat and kept my feet dry and toasty warm until its time to retrieve the boat as im not a fan of sinking the trailer for such a small boat.

hehe i jump in the boat and my dad drives the boat down the ramp he lauchs it into the water and i start the yammy and he parks the car then i pick him up from the jetty,

then when we get back i drop my dad off at the jetty he backs the car down and i drive it too the trailer he hooks it up and brings it up DONE drive up ramp and tie down the motor and the boat ... drive off without getting our feet soaked

I started the thread but thought that I give some people a go before opening my mouth.

I fish off the rocks (land based) mainly and I target Trevally from the rocks. As you might think there are going to be times that the weather is going to be cold. This is something that we just have to put up with as the passion for fishing can be strong. How do I stay warm in the winter months while fishing.

The most basic thing to do is wear warmer clothing, a spring suit, a wet suit or a padded PFD. Do not get your feet wet. Prevent from getting splashed by wearing a spray jacket. Get some gloves full cover for your fingers or fingerless gloves. Fish from a higher location from the rocks, one that does not get washed over.

Try fishing from the beach, waft or dare I say it a boat.

The cold is not what will get to us but the water on our bodies that will cause heat lost from evaporation. So take along a towel to dry your feet if they get wet. And with your first aid kit a thermal blanket.

As you can see there are some people like myself that love the winter months for fishing.

So I go prepared.

My wet feet come from the retrieve. I just chuck the boat in the water with a 15 meter or so rope attached and pull it to the jetty.
If I do not stick my trailer in deep I can prolly get the boat on without wet feet the same way because the trailer has a little walkway on it. Just winch it on.

I still wakeboard in the middle of winter, No wetsuit.. Im a cold person but, I like the cold. I hate hot days.

While on the subject of landbased winter fishing.. Ill be in sydney in 2 weeks and would like to fish with a mate, but no boat.. Anyone got any spots we could try out, during the day, close to the shire. Not rock fishing, just of the shore or a wharf? Comon Catch, im sure you woiuld be able to PM me a spot..

Jumpus / KKW, you have been getting whiting around Gunnamatta, and with colder weather a few more might move in.. Any recomendations on spots to try there?

I think you should do as you said earlier. Keep pestering jumpy to take you out on his boat.

Yea, But im up there to see the gurl, so prob wont have a full day to spare.. Ill see how it goes? What ya think Jumpy?? Got room in the boat for me and a mate for a day's fishing?

try doing that with one person, it makes it a little challenging.

yes 15m rope works until it gets windy or rough, and the day you cant start your engine you'll find that out the hard way once its off the trailer and the car is in the car park.

Once ive finished my system i'll post it/pm you to see how easy it is.

I hate cold water so the further i can stay away from it the better.

I need to get a walk way on my trailer would make life easier!

Seriously I'll launch my boat from protected ramps (grays point or georges river motor boat club for instance) or I won't launch.
