why do my droppers allways tangle up? what am i doing wrong...

I use 3 way swivels, tryed differant lengths of line and always ends up in tangles??

I tie the droppers onto the leader, trim the bottom & leave around 12" dangling upwards to to the took on to

yea, what sort of knot ya use to tie the droppers to the leader? are you putting loops in the leader and then tying to the loops?

was driving me CRAZY!!

Got a brain block @ the moment cant think what the knot is called.

I add a seperate piece of line to the main trace cut it about 2 ft long, run it parralel to trace then 1/2 twist it to make a loop
After which I pass both trace & dropper back through the loop 5 times & pull tight, repeat for 2nd dropper then trim off excess

the not i use is the dropper not it is on that same page J.G. posted i make up about a dozen with snap lock swivels on them so if u get a tangle or busted up it only takes a jiff to change

Hey guy's,the knot i use was not on that page and i can't rremembe the name.I'll try to explain.

Grab some leader and starting at the sinker end make a double and form a circle.

Now take the end of the double and pass it threw the circle twice,easy right.

Now comes the tricky part and the really hard to explain part.

Pass the double end threw again but this time wrap it loose and as you go over the outside of circle have a look and you should see another smaller circle inside the other,yeah.if not go back to starrt .

Now you simply pass the double end under and threw the circle/loop and pull tight.

this should leave you with a dropper that will NEVER slip.

That's the sinker done now you have two more to do,go up the line so far,form anothe double and away you go again & again,simple eh.

After a while you can manipulate the size of the circle,just b4 you pull it all tight,to get a near perfect size droppe every time.

And like poly said i use a clip at the top,although i do'nt use mine for undoing tangles(hardly) mines mainly for that time when u need to quickly whack on a lure.IE:when your limited to 1 rod.

Do'nt forget to whack some pretty beads on there too!!

Hope that helps more than it confuses as once sussed it's a qik,cheap and easy way to do it,well for me anyway.

bringnig this subject back up, Ive been using the surgeons knot which is good, but still gtting tangles, wondering if my traces are to long? Bout 12".. Might try 6" nxt time or is this going to be to short?

How are your swivels Chadd??

Make sure you don't use too bigga swivel.

Keep it as small as possible.


6" not sure,but does sound a bit short.

Another thing prawn feelers tangle'em up a bit,i always rip them off.

I don't use any swivels at all, I make loops for the hooks & sinker with a knot that I couldn't possibly explain here although it's a very simple knot.

I was shown this knot while bottom bashing out of charter boats 40 years ago & use it for everything except making a double, for that I still use a secret knot that Jumpy showed me called a spider's crutch or something.

Looking at the link above for knots it could be the hangman's knot but I have a lot of trouble getting my head around the the pictures Vs the actual tieing of the knots.

I need to show someone or have someone show me to convey the info.

Tangles(Chadd),i was in the weld bay last night and came across a ruler with inches on it.

Well i had a look and just started larf'n .You are refering to inches ey,i had a look and thought no wonder your getting tangles.12inches is too short & 6 well we won't go there .

Anyway,i tie mine so that the sinker wraps around the handle of your reel,leaving the swivel abit away from the tip,too easy and handy for traveling.

They will still get the odd tangle in rough conditions tho,just make sure every drop you sort it out b4 putting it down again.
