Most GSM phones will automatically put them selves in Emergency Call mode when no service from your network is available... It will then look for another network to link with.. This will work even if phone is locked or has no sim card...
If no servicee is available at all it will not work, it does not connect to a saterlite..

mines a very old phone rum so i will put it in, i do think u are wright about the newer ones though 
even most old phones should do it poly..
When your in an area of no service and you press send it will come up with emergency calls only. Push send again to make the Call... Would be worth checking in your manual though..

112 is the GSM international standard emergency number which can only be dialled on digital mobile phones. 112 can be dialled anywhere in the world with GSM coverage and is automatically translated to that country's emergency number. NOTE: This is For GSM Phones Only!!! This means If your on Telstra GSM but telstra have no signal, it will look for vodaphone or optus etc etc untill it finds a network that will have enough service to make the call..

It does not connect to saterlite, You still need to be within range of a GSM network.
the phone will search and connect to any carrier but not a satellite.

In Contacts Type the word ICE & put the number of someone to contact In Case of Emergency, just in case something ever happens to you others will know who to contact.

Its probably like on a cars dash the is a picture of a fuel bowser next to your fuel level gage. well the pump is surposed to point towards the side of the car that the fuel cap is located on. Works for some but not all
