Thats what i think as well. sometimes they're just too lazy to go after a live target if they have the dead option.
Mate you've fished the bommy with me & as I've explained to you it's a reef which meets the sand bottom.
Many a time if boats swinging in the wind unknowingly we cast onto the sans & on many occasions have been hit by flathead , you dont know they are there till you wind in & on @ least 1/2 doz occasions the flathead have only been wee wittle fullars about 20 cm's long & every time one of those comes to the boat be garaunteed a Kungy is following it they never take the flathead just follow the flatone all the way to the boat & these Kungs are the Jumbo versions easily 10 - 15 kg.
So there you go, I figure it's curiosity more thean hunger but if there's cubes handy & I throw them in to the water those same Kungs will eat the cubes work that out.

And it is a fact that lighter outfits always winners, but what i thought was 10 kg still be fairly light for them. And by the way i did put a pilchard on the heavier ones, still no hits.
If a Kung is hungry it will eat next time instead of a whole pilly use 1/2 or 3/4's of of one.
You may have also read what I've said on many an occasion which is.
I believe esp if fishing off a wharf etc which I suspect you've done, with a lighter line you'll stand more chance of landing the fish
Dont be scared to let the kung run on a light drag most of the time they dont know they're even hooked let them run out clear of the wharf away from obstacles & tire them out away from structure, that way when you get line back on the spool & in close they should be pretty tired & give you less grief.
Think to many peeps think it's best to just lock up on a fush but mate when you do that it's a signal for the fush to go harder & in the case of Kungs they'll go straight for structure & bust you off.
I did this report some time back when Spud came up to the Big Smoke
OK the kungs weren't massive but we did not lose a single fush all we were using was 3 kg outfits we had a ball & look how close we were to structure in the pics very easy for the kungs to have taken us there but they didn't cause we were only using about 1 kg of drag.
