Quick fish late this afternoon with the kids for a couple of hours and they had a ball. Heaps of juvenile leatheries and snapper. They also caught quite a few mid sized sweep.

Highlights were:
his first ever leathery (only 20cm but he identified it on the sticker)
his first ever blurter (27cm to the fork of the tail, not sure where you are to measure them)

Like Daniel no keepers but heaps of fun for 2 hours.

BTW his life jacket is under his jumper. He got cold and I could not be bothered getting him to put it under his jumper.

Forgot to mention that as I had taken of a sweep for him he put his rod down to get it from me to throw it back. No sooner than he put it down the drag is going off and the rod bouncing around. He caught another one. He could not believe that it tried to eat the last skerrick of squid let on his hook.

Did you see the high tech gear he uses?
Jarvis Walker kids combo complete with clip on float. Bloody thing has a plastic spool complete with casting dags in it.
I think in 1 month he will be a happy boy (he will be 6). Daddy has bought him a new outfit, Browning 2000 reel (cannot remember the model number) all light blue anodise and a new rod to suit.

They both love fishing and her birthday is 3 weeks after his. Got her a new Viva reel just got to select a rod for her.

I believe if they are catching fish, even small ones, they are learning the craft.

Well spotted young man.

Actually fished both sides. Heaps of Leatheries on the eastern side and always good fishing on the western side. Had bugger all time as kids need their sleep for school tomorrow.

I have tried fishing just before the 8 knot zone at Gray's Point but the day I was there, there were a lot of boats and not much happening. I will try and get back there again one day.
Are you referring to the main channel or over towards Mansion Bay? I do see a few kayak boys fishing the sand flats on the southern side of Grays Point.

Hang on a min. I used the clip on float when fishing off the rocks. Do not have to walk all the way back to where the stuff are just to setup again. They are quick to release and in the pocket they go to fish the bottom.

Missed a few posts.

Well I bought 5 Viva distributed reels so I got some free hats.
Jumpy recommend what was good value and he was correct. From memory
Browning 2000 (Jumpy is probably correct TF model)
Metalium 2000
Viva 4000 (Ballet) maybe that was another 2000
Viva 5000 (Coast)
Viva Nereus NT4000
Their birthdays are both in April so thet is when we get to try them out. Currently all hidden.

I live around here too. Just too easy to fish the Hacking.

Yes the clip on floats are easy to attach. But for the kids it is a little hard for them to see if a fish pulling the bait sideways compared to a pencil type float. But they are learning to watch as it rolls.

Yes it is great to see the kids fishing, but I would like to see dad fishing. When they get the birthday presents the Browing and Metalium I will try and see if they will have another go at putting the bait on. They love to touch the bait but are scared of sticking themselves with the hook.

Other than the ball type clip on float there are also clip on egg shape type floats. The middle is about 1/3 the size of the lenght. I have a friend use one for his Luderick fishing and so I went out and purchase one my self. This has yet to be used, only had it for three years. rolleyes.gif

It is good to see that they take care. No matter who I go with I always tell people to know where your hook is.

I will give you a story of what happen to me when I did not watch the hook. I was fishing from the rocks and I went to cast. Behind me was a paper bag that the bakers use for flour. It had some bread in it about a third full. I cast with all might and I ripped the bag with a gash of about 30 - 35cm. The hook got stuck just as I was about to cast. What would have happen to a person if this caught them.

Always know where you hook is.

Christos, I'll have a look for other shaped clip on floats. Was not aware of them.

I guess they would be off to the hospital to get the hook removed after they throw your rod in the water, very deep water, and if you could not out run them you might be going for a swim as well.

I think we all have a story like that, just I'm not telling. biggrin.gif

I have read and followed up on how to remove a hook from a person protruding body parts. There are two methods that I know one would be to push it through the skin making another hole and cut the end with a pair of pliers just after the barb. Then it comes back through the new hole and out the original hole.

The second method would be to push it back through the original hole using string or thin fishing line as a guide to hold down the hook against the skin while extracting from the original entrance. The barb has to clear the skin without causing more damage.

It is just that I am not looking forward to doing either, so prevention is better then cure.
