Well I hurt my a back a couple of weeks ago & since I haven't been able to do a great deal outdoors thought I'd buildup a few new rods to keep myself occupied.

There's one drying on the rotisserie as I speak & it's a identical match to the one in pics below only difference is that one is a 6 kg & one below is a 4 kg stick both are to suit overhead reels.

There's also another 5 or 5 new rods I'm playing around with only glued on the corks , hyperlons & winch's on them so far haven't worked out guide spacing's etc as yet will post pics later ron as they progress.

very sorry to hear about your bad back J.G., but lets face it u really did need to get on and build those rods you must be down to your last 100 at least

Dont know if my sickness is the sore back or an addiction to fishing rods

the addiction my friend is common to us all and the head shrinks have given it a fancy name called fishess catchess syndrome the trouble is there is no cure.

I generally do all the glueing of the corks winch's etc 1st thenbind when I feel like it.

you would not believe it if you seen what jumpy has ...maybe a telephone figure of reels and rods stacked at his unit and also at mums ....enough to start a tackle shop true blu..............dont worry jump about ya sore back we all are getting old and have had the same probs dont let it get to you soldier on matey ...be strong....bones ageing and we dont lift stuff properly and expect our back to stay good ....well i got news for you bro aint gunna happen.........praise the lord

Very purdy. I just attach my guides with waterproof bandaids. If I had a rotisserie like yours, then I could do better

they look good mate ,,makes me want to redo all mine ,hahaahha

It's more a hobby than anything.

But I really have to be in the mood else I lose my way the actual guide binding is quite easy & not very time consuming.

It's the patterns just after the foregrip that are velly time consuming.

Yep Yep those stickers are great aren't they, think they give the rod that wittle bit extra once upon a time I could weave those fish patterns with the cotton but I dont have the patience nor eyesight I used to so the stickers surfice.

I am still thinking of what was said about you having so many blanks. This is one massive hobby.

Question relating to the last three rods in the picture.

Always wonder why some rods do not have grips all the way from the reel seat to the butt.
Is it to save on cork?
What type of rods do they call them or what type of fishing are they used for?

Fishing Rods & you use them to catch fishy's

It's more a personal thingy It'l Do.

I like to have the butt of a rod under my armpit so like a longer butt on the rod, you also want to keep the rod or any rod as light as posible so why use cork/hyperlon all the way.

Cork dose get expensive, but these types of rods have been around for 30 years & I laugh these days when I read someone posting they just got the latest design rod like the ones you're asking about.

In the process of building up 1/2 doz 3 kg bait sticks, these are the 7' 6" wrap 2 blanks cant buy them ready built but prob my favourite blank for light line fishing for brims /snappa's.

I understand the basics of finding the spine, binding guides, installing the grips and reel seat.
Can someone point me to where I can see or learn how to bind the decorative weave pattern. Preferably an internet site.
Very interested to see how it is done. Maybe Jumpy next time you are doing one I can see how it is done.

Unless you're geting into the more complex say fish weaves all other patterns are a spin off from your simple chevron or diamond patterns & it's up to your imagination as to how the pattern will turn out.

Cant help you out with rod building sites as I dont visit any try googling them up but think you 1st need some basic knowledge if you want to understand what is being talked about.

Like I said in previous postyou really need a bit of imagination to work out where the weaves start & finish

The Chevron is prob the easiest of all the patterns & a good one to get started on till your skill starts developing

Yah When I do the binding I have a dirty great magnafying glass on a stand between me and the lathe
and find I was using my fingers to turn the rod and not the motor so sold the rod lathe and just made up a hand rotisary system.
Now I miss the lathe when doing under binding etc.
Can't win. Just give up and not do any fancy stuff is the best for me these days.

Sincce all of a sudden there seems to be some interest in rod building I've started a new rod & will start a thread on Diamond Pattern from stratch.

Frank dont worry my eyes aren't what they used to be thats why I dont get into the real fancy stuff anymore.

But have to admit I've got a 6kg stick ready to bindup & toying wheather I do something like some eagles on the design.

Well you guys will have to wait for the next rod to see the weave.

The pics came out crappy had to take the camera off auto so as the flash wouldn't glare the pics & they weren't focused.

I'll use the big camera next time.

Thought some may be interested in seein how the rod in last pick came out after one coat of resin

What brand of winch have u used j.g, the rod looks great will u add more resin

Not a Fuji but it's one of the better quality Chi Nee ones & let me tell you some of those Chi Nee/Taiwon ones are pathetic

Yes I generally do 2 coats on the light sticks sometimes a very fine 3rd coat

How do you do a very fine third coat?

Put Less Resin On

The 1st coat is a bit heavy main reason it needs to soak into the cotton

Next coat alot thinner & it's moreso to fill any sink backs which have occured after the 1st coat

With every coat whether it's 1 , 2 or 3 not a good idea to just apply & 4get

I go back every say 20 minutes to check on it, you can stuff the job by leaving air bubbles in the resin

So I brush through again & again if need be + by doing this you also get rid of any area's where to much resin has been applied.

Not often but if I 4get or doing something else & the resin starts gettting tacky ??

I use a bit of Metho on the brush to make it glide along easier the metho dry's & dosen't effect the resin .

Like I said earlier you can apply resin on a bit thick , let it sink in & settle into the cotton , then use your brush to thin it out.

After each swipe of the brush just sqeeze out the excess out b4 brushing again
