[attachment=1054:100_3927.JPG]Well, at long last there was no West in the forecast for today. The fishing has been dead all up and down the coast, due to the westerlies (according to local legend). At any rate, we have only been catching one or two fish each day out, despite the sounder going ballistic with boomerangs.
Today, we went to waypoint 09 and saw sign, but it was blowing NW. Dropped anchor and picked up a legal sweetlip. I also got a pike, which I thought was unusual for up here (SteveP is the PIKE master) and thought I saw a flash of chrome down deep. Put on a chrome pilchard lure and had a cast. Hooked up immediately on a big Ribbon Fish, or Wolf Herring as they are also known. The water was boiling with them. Caught a swag of them and other boats saw the action. They trolled all around us, also getting hookups, but were so close that you could have passed a sandwich to them. Some people are so thick, ignorant and just plain obnoxious. I hooked a biggish ribbon fish and it was putting up a good fight, going beserk under the boat. In a flash, the reel screamed off drag and a green backed torpedo took off at 100kph. My first mack attack. I ended up with a head and fins as the mack bit the ribbon fish cleanly in half. It looked to9 be around a metre or so in length. Dr Phil and Colin heard the drag scream and saw the aftermath, but didn't see the hit. Anyway, we had seven boats circling us and some cut their motors and drifted next to us. It p...d me off, and all went quiet for a while so we pulled anchor and moved elsewhere. The wind came up and everyone went back in. We decided we had enough for the day, but I asked colin if we could have a troll back to spot 09 and spot 10. At spot 10, some nice reef showed up, and lots of fish on the sounder. The wind had swung SE, so anchor was dropped. Well, trevally everywhere, a couple of flathead and a half hour of school and spotted mack mayhem. Lost some gear and some fish. I reckon they hit the swivels on hooked fish, cutting off the wire traces. I landed one schoolie of 60cm on a non wire trace rig. It will go down well tonight, with a cold beer. Stocked up the bait fridge with around 14 or so wolf herring up to 60cm in length. Had a ball, despite so few table fish. Tomorrow is my last day to fish, so here's hoping. Battery in my camera went dead (I left it switched on), but I took a couple with my phone. Try and post some tonight or tomorrow. Havin fun in the sundaes. Raided Phil's store of mangoes as well. Yum. This post has been edited by kkw: Jul 31 2008, 12:38 AM

Good to hear you are enjoying yourself there KK, you need to get the beach rod out with a big popper on it with 2 sets of trebles for when the fools get too close and they will back off when a set of trebles go whistling past their big dumb ears!

I will say that this is a good report.
The thing that I like about this site is that sometimes we are small in number and replies but there seems to be more knowledge on this site. I for one did not know about ribbon fish and so I had to look them up. I have several books on fish species but when you are trying to find the book it just does not seem to be around. So I will ask, what type of bait were you using? |

Out for another glorious morning's fishing. Lots of fish on the sounder, and landed a few undersize school mackeral. They are like our kingies and need to be 60cm. As always happens, these ones were all around the 55cm mark.
Saw Phil out there. Spotted the anomally he calls a boat, from 15NM away. Saw Phil hook and land a Remora. I think he was scared it would suck onto him and leave a 'love bite', which he would have had to explain to his wife, so he cut it off. Had a huge mack or tuna, circle the boats for a while. Couldn't entice it to take a bait though. Anyone care to guess what my brother in law, Colin, has hooked into? No!!! it isn't the bottom or the anchor.

Back home. It is cold .......
The fish Colin hooked and 'played' for 15 mins was a big old Qld Groper. The 17lb line and hook would have been little more than an annoyance to it - something like a mossie buzzing around the room at night. When Col broke it off, it swam to the next boat and the old fella hooked up. He pulled the anchor, and was towed around for a while before he also decided to break it off. McSundae Phil, said it was a resident on that little reef and has been hooked many, many times. A bit of fun when the bite shut down. |
