I always have a dispute with my wife when I anchor up near other boats where she wants me to be 100 miules away from everyone else where I would say between 50 -100 meter is enough.
Needless to say depends a bit on the circumstances.

What is the general etiquette on this.

Jack

If I can cast a 25gm lure at you and reach you, you are too close. laugh.gif I was anchored at a spot on Saturday and another boat came over and drifted to almost hand shaking distance. He had to start the motor and move off. That's too close and just plain ignorant. I reckon 50m is o.k.

As long as you are not interfering with the other boats fishing,

Ie, noise, lines to close, no giving them privacy..

Plenty of times ive seen 20-30 boats all sharing middle ground of JB and not a boat anywhere else... Everyone wants to be where the fish are so its really a common sense thing!

I have seen a small tinnie anchored in the river about 75 - 100 meters off shore.

I was fishing with some friends and another three guys came next to me to go fishing. They were setting up and I had to go for a walk. I returned and I got a story from the friend that one of the guys had cast so far that they heard a loud ding. And the guys in the boat jumped.

They cast so far that they reached the boat.

I was only casting about 25 meters or so, with a maximum of 30 meters. It was deep water.

I really think the majority of boats out on the water are bloody hopeless.

They see one boat anchored & assume it's a good spot to fish & so next thing you know there's a flatila of boats anchored around that area then they slowly disappear when nobody is catching any fush.

To me Polite Boating Etiquette is

* Be aware of which way the lines are runing & dont anchor in another boats burley trail
* If not sure approach the anchored boats bow & ask
* Be mindfull they dont own the water as some may tell you to toof off
* If anchoring up current make sure your lines aren't going to snag on their anchor rope
* Also dont let out to much rope cause if the wind changes or swirls you'll end up on top of the other boat

Don't anchor in front of a boats drift.
Don't fish in someone else's burley trail
50 mtrs is fine but a bit hard when in a marine park as this congregates boats in one area. So be mindful of your fishing area and theirs
Be mindful of your wake when passing other boats especially with children on board.
Learn the boat rules, which side to pass on and giving way etc http://www.maritime.nsw.gov.au/boattest.html
Don't hog the ramp or jetty & wash bays. Don't cue jump without asking if there ready to go
Don't leave your rubbish behind this includes rinsing cleaning tables.

John,

What book are you reading from, that's not how it is done as most ski boat owners learn from a different book:
Drive as close to fishing boats as possible.
Make sure your music is blaring as loud as possible
Have the wakeboarder attempt a big air trick next to you (99% chance of a fall so you can turn hard and create a huge wash)
Yahoo and make as much noise as you can for as many fishing boating you can find.
At the boat ramp take all the time you want and keep the stereo PUMPING.

True that this is only 80% of wakeboarders

Jack I don't like guys that drift close to you and I try to fish away from the crowds. I would prefer others to stay 50-100 metres away especially if they are making a lot of noise.

Thankfully the speed boats are further up river, I wouldn't go there on long weekends. In fact I wonder how there hasn't been any accidents there are so many of them
Over the Easter break I saw people having there lunch on the ramp before moving. mad.gif
But a bit of cutesy goes a long way
