The Ling is totally different to the goatfish. They both have barbells under their jaws. The ling is brown with creamy stripe and a rounded type tail. The goatfish has a forked tail. The goatfish is what Kamil was referring to, I think.
The wrasse has many colour variations and species, the orange/red variation being a common one. The Beardie or 'Ling' is common and can be seen on p62 of Colemans Aus Sea Fishes south of the 30's. Anyway, it isn't a pissing match. I think it is a wrasse, you think it is a beardie. The Ling sold in fishshops is a deep sea fish, not the piddly little Beardies we catch so often. We agree to disagree. JG would have kept it, as he kept the baby bream, so maybe he can take a pic of its head laugh.gif and prove either of us wrong. I don't look good as a monkeys uncle

Well well well,hope ya like Bannana's KKW laugh.gif ,

Mate my intension was not to start a barney, just i love fish id,it's a bit of a hobbie, and i won't normally get into a debate unless i'm pretty sure i know wat i'm on about. That's why i made those comments.

Firstly i don't need JG to prove either of us wrong as no-one is wrong, just confucious laugh.gif .

But after rreading what you had to say,i went back to my job and started to think.

Then it struck me that wrasse have 2 things that i could'nt see in the pic.

1 was teeth,no teeth there

2 the scales, all wrasse have a large scale pattern

there was also somthing that i could see,the pec fins, two separate ones, wrasse have one long one.

the last thing i thought of that got me was yourr reference,so i googled your book, and thats where the problem is i reckon, that book was published in the 80's dude, last reprint was in 83 i think, not an updated one like mine tongue.gif ,cant remember the name ,doh.

so then i googled the fish and seen the moai wrasse and then the Ling, geez i stuffed that up Ling are way diff to bearded cod, which is what i beleive to be jg's fish, which was also what X had called it.The reason i call them ling is because thats what they sell them as in the shops, aswell as bearded cod and Hoki. rolleyes.gif

So sorry guy's if you think i'm being picky but i just think it's important to get fish id's right even tho it can be so hard, what with books and shops all saying different things.

And i've always found 'one block' to be on the money most times in the past in this regard and many other's.

Well Smelly, only because you couldn't help yourself, and because you are a perfectionist in fish I.D. laugh.gif JG's 'ling' really isn't a LING (which is a deep water fish and ugly as a hat full of ....) but it is a BEARDIE. I agree it wasn't a wrasse. I was wrong. We can share those bananas now biggrin.gif. Ling on the left, with the eel type tail and beardie on the right with the paddle tail.
