Thursday August 13, 2015 News Local NewsSearch for man missing in dam near Manilla to resume on Thursday By Breanna Chillingworth Aug. 12, 2015, 7 p.m. WEDNESDAY 8.30pm: A search for a man who went missing in a dam at Manilla on Wednesday afternoon has been suspended overnight after failing to find him. Two men, aged 26 and 57, attended Split Rock Dam at Upper Manilla to test a boat motor they had been working on about 1pm. The men launched a 12-foot boat with the outboard motor attached, but it stalled a short distance from the shore. Neither man was wearing a life vest at the time as they attempted to restart the motor. During the attempts to re tart the motor the pull-cord broke. The older man attempted to find an oar to row back to shore while the 26-year-old man jumped into the water. The younger man failed to make it to shore. By the time the older man reached land, the younger man had disappeared under the water. Police from Oxley Local Area Command were notified and attended the location about 1.40pm. A police launch was used to search the area along with SES volunteers - without success. The water temperature was estimated at 6 degrees, almost three meters deep and was choppy with a strong westerly wind when the man disappeared. The search was postponed about 6pm but is expected to resume at 7am Thursday. It is expected police divers from the Marine Area Command will attend to assist with the search. Local officers as well as Tamworth police scoured the area before a police boat from Manilla was deployed. A local SES crew and flood boat was also called to assist in the search but failed to find any sign of the man. There was choppy conditions and strong winds during the search effort which was suspended on Wednesday night. Oxley police confirmed the search will resume on Thursday morning. -------------------- I WANNA GO: FISHIN WITH SUMO.
