Went fishing today.

Launched from grays point and got some yakka's just around the corner on some peeled prawns. Also had some underage bream
Got the wife and kid from the ramp and went to get some more of those yakkas

Than got some yabbies at mainbar and went fishing in southwest arm.
No luck on the yabbies but one of the yakkas had a fair chunk of him taken out by something.

Dropped of the wife and kid at the ramp and went out again. Met up with flattie_hunter and got a bream and my PB whiting (only my second one so that is no surprise) As I guessed it to be underage I did not bother measure it.
Kept getting big pulls on my yabbies but nothing on it.
Got to see the culprit and stuck on a squid lure and caught some squid.

In the meantime my yakka's were obviously on to thin leader (15lb) as my yakkas (2 of them) kept disappearing including my hooks.

Decided to call it a day and get heavier leader before attempting big fish

Will stick a pic of my PB (first) squid as well

I started fishing hacking at the end of december, so I'm learning.
But....I can now get yakka's when I want them and yabbies when I want them.
I have a hard time finding flathead, although I'd love to catch some more of them.

And yes missing the big sucks, but I now have 50lbs leader in my tackle box and on my big outfit. Never crossed my mind that these toothie critters would make short work of 15lbs leader.

The first one in sw arm was a nice bite, a perfect cresent shape chunk bitten out of my yakka, just behind my hook mad.gif

You had nice weather for your weekend out.

Squid is good to catch. I carry two squid lures with me. One has not even come close to be wet unless it rains.

Now here comes the interesting part. I have yet to catch a squid but my friend has on one of the squid lures that I have. dry.gif

Pretty much as I did not stay long after you guys left. Ran out of yabbies

I was geting hit by them quite frequently they just did not stay on my normal hook, and I did not no what was going on untill one came up after my bait as I was reeling it in

Reading that I'm assuming the chunk went missing just behind the head ???

If so then you got squidled yep yep squid do that all the time with live baits.

Best results in the hacking is to drift for them in the main chanel with live bait a bit hard to do on the weekends though with all the boat traffic.

If it's a slow drift set reels on free spool with ratchets on & toss some SP's about the drop off's as well run out tide is the go as they've moved off the flats into the deeper water.

Think the best one I nailed in the hacking was just over 1 . 1 meters on live bait

Yes just behind the head (about 3-4 cm diameter cresent shape bite is this a giant squid?). You clairvoyant or were you spying on me ?? laugh.gif

about 3-4 cm diameter cresent shape bite is this a giant squid or they latch on and eat for a while?.

Do the squids also bite 15 lbs trace? or would that have been a toothier creature? (description of the action: nervous twitch of the rod followed by hard pull and than nothing)

That would be leather jackets 15 lb trace is no prob to them & if you were left with just line clean cut

They also like swivels so often all you'll get back is your main line.

I actually read what people write & dont go off 1/2 cocked assuming

Well I stuck a 50 lbs trace on it so hopefully next time I won't have this problem

Thx
