Decided to shoot down the bay for the day for a quick fix!

Left Dads about 7.30 and arrived at the bait shop around 8.30, picked up some slimy fillets, squid and some prawns.

On the water about 9 and headed out to south west of snapper is. where I done a few drifts and then anchored up on a drop off.. Got a few rock cod and a few snags. Didnt wanna go to far as there was reports of a westerly so I headed back into the river where the tide had just turned and done a few hours drifting for flatties. I recon I caught 30+ 32cm Sandys and a handful of flounder and a few small whiting. Nearly all catches were on slimy strips. squid and prawns were completly unsuccsesful!

Dropped one good flatty at the boat.. Didnt take alot home but caught alot of fish and suspect that in a few months time all them 32cm flatties will have grown and should be some goodies in there!

Had no luck on the plastics.

Overall a good day on the water and glad to get the fish in. The rest of my break was spent knockin over bunnies and searchin for pigglets.

Oh, and DRINKING!!!! smile.gif

You must have been doing something wrong ????

Flathead are the only fish that I've come across that you wont miss out on with SP's

You'd be surprised how many peeps dont have a clue

I 1st used SP's 30 years ago with very little success main reason being we retrieved the lure the same way we would say a chrome slice spinning for surface fsh & the lure never worked.

Once you get the knack you'll find 90 % of your hits will be when the lure drops & not on the rise.

Here's a little trick you can try next time out if drifting, put a SP out the back say 20 meters depending on depth of water & see how many hookups you get with rod in a rod holder

How ya go'n Rum,

It's been a while since i've been to 'THE BAY'(yes JG they call it that too),anyway every time i go there i head for the 'power lines'.

The overhead cables that cross the river just after the first bend past the bridge,ya can't miss'em.It's a known spot, good drift'n for flatties.

Another spot is the bay to your left(heading up river)after the power line's.This is a top bay,not the creek but the first descent sized bay, from memory theres only a couple of racks in there. In this bay i've caught some good Flatones flicking sp's while also drifting a bait.BTW Prawns always get a hit on my boat,or any other boat i'm on.HAWKSBURY RIVER ones tho,not that tweed or windybanks crap.

As for Gulps mmmmm,i'd rather squidgies meself, never caught nothin on a gulp,oh sorry coupla Taylor JMO.

Summer time is a good time to head up to Neligen.

BTW good report mate

My last few cylde trips rsulted in nothing but small snapper. This was the first time I didnt catch one at all. and was really good to see the flatties in numbers! Can only mean good things to come as the water warms up. Id say the rain a month back has given the system a good flush and things are hotting up.. Keen to get back down there next month!

Hey,that reminds me of the last time i used one.

I went on a charter in a lake down south (won't mention names),anyway i asked the bloke if he used sp's and graphite rods??

The reply was 'yep top of the line rods with ten ball bearing reels and heaps'a different sp's'

Thinking 'i'm no fool' i took my own stuff anyway.

When old mate rocked up i spied him loading the boat.I seen him with about ten nice long graphite rods. This was all from a distance mind you. After seeing all those rods i dumbly decided to leave my gear in the car.

Anyway we get on the boat and do a bit of bream fishing,2 foot from the ramp, before heading for some flatty flick'n.

Most of the time i had my head in his photo album he had on board. There was sh*t loads of big flatones all choking on a pink prawn. So when it came time to pic sp's i choose the pinky,of course.

To my horror old mate hands me a rod and said prawn.Well from a distance i could'nt tell the reels where loaded with mono WTF.He even ran a swivel than a trace to lure.
Well then i looked at the sp,OMG,the hook was too big and the prawn was bunched up like a bannana so the hook would exit out the hole.As you'd imagine when the lure was jigged it would try to just do a loop,it was hopeless so i tried to re rig it,thats when old m8 spun out ask'n wat i'm doing, and insisted it worked like that.He also had NO Squidgies mad.gif .

Needless to say i caught nothing that day, even tho another boat was killing the flatty's and when i asked what they where using they replied 'SQUIDGIES'.Since then i've never been able to bring meself to actualy pay for some laugh.gif .
