Monday, 13 Dec 2010 11:56am

Four people have been arrested and charged following a weekend operation targeting anti-social behaviour and marine-related offences on the Georges River in Sydney’s south.

Operation Silo was conducted between midday and 7pm on Saturday (11 December 2010), with officers from Marine Area Command and SCC Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad, plus St. George, Hurstville, Miranda and Bankstown Local Area Commands, combining with staff from agencies including Maritime, Fisheries, National Parks and Wildlife, and local councils.

The operation, which employed both covert and overt strategies, targeted anti-social and marine-related offences on the water and foreshores of Botany Bay to Georges River and Kurnell, with a particular emphasis on the activities of jet skiers.

Four people were arrested during the operation and charged with a range of offences including operate unregistered vessel and vehicle, disobey police direction, street racing, and possess prohibited drug (cannabis). Other results included:

· 130 random breath Test (marine) were conducted;
· 40 random breath tests (traffic) were conducted;
· 34 infringements (marine) were issued;
· 19 infringements (traffic) were issued;
· 4 infringements (fishing) were issued;
· 13 marine warnings were issued; and
· 19 people were searched;

Special Services Group Commander, Assistant Commissioner Ken McKay, says similar operations will be conducted throughout summer.

“Family groups should be free to enjoy Botany Bay and its surrounding foreshore over the summer months without having their day spoiled by loutish behaviour from hoons on jet skis,” Asst Comm McKay said.

“Police and other government agencies will continue to target anti-social activity and marine-related offences to ensure that everyone can enjoy our waterways without fear of intimidation or injury.”

“Anyone who thinks they can act unlawfully when on a boat or jet ski and escape punishment needs to think again.”

“Irresponsible and anti-social behaviour won’t be tolerated under any circumstances, whether it be on land or sea.”

“You will be caught and you will face the consequences for your actions,” Asst Comm McKay said.
