Well, this will be my first post here, as I normally just lurk around and absorb as much knowledge from the many posts on here, and another fishing site.
My name is Daniel, I have lived in Ipswich in QLD for the last 12 years, since I moved from Manilla, and usually fish the Brissy river. I am a bait fisherman, but I am trying to learn to fish with plastics, as the HB's have never seemed to work for me. Now, my predicament. As stated in the title, I am going down to Manilla for the last weekend in July, (25th - 28th) and as I have not fished there since I was a kid 12 years ago, I am now a bit behind on where to fish, and what to use, IE: live bait, or soft plastics, and what types to use. Bear in mind for any advice, I will be land based. Can you use cast nets for live bait? Can you still fish from the weir in the park, down past the junction to the small bride going out of town? Can you fish under the main town bridge still? Can anyone suggest any decent spots somewhere between Manilla and Barraba? What are the legal sizes for species of fish? What bait for what fish? And lastly, Where to buy said bait in town? as the corner store across from the primary school used to have gold plated bait when I was last there. Or atleast the price suggested so. I would dearly love to catch a cod or a yellowbelly, as when I was a kid, the carp there where a thrill eoungh to catch. All advice will be greatly appreciated. Danny. |

G'Day Outlaw
I'm definately not a fresh water fisho but have been to the area you're refering to. That bloody SUMOSASAURIS mate it a daily choir to take us for what he thought was a joy ride to Lake Keepit he prob thought someone was out to steal it & thought it his duty to patrol it's shores We did however convince CATCH22 that there were some big flathead in the river Never fished the place only one of the rivers out of town dont even know which one we were camped there & SteveP did a couple of reports http://www.fishing-oz-style.info/forum/ind...p?showtopic=832 http://www.fishing-oz-style.info/forum/ind...p?showtopic=837 Whether fresh or salt water think to many peeps give up to easy I'm refering to your comment QUOTE but I am trying to learn to fish with plastics, as the HB's have never seemed to work for me. I'll tell you what you cant just throw around the same HB if that's what you were doing ?? There were 4 of us fishing that trip in cod country only fished a couple of hrs , it was a shooting not fishing trip all the fish in those reports were taken on the same lure the cod weren't interested in any other lure whether it be a SP, Spinner Bait etc etc prob was I only had 2 o0f those HB's & the 1st got destroyed the day b4 quite a few other HB's in the tackle box none of them got a hit. QUOTE Can you use cast nets for live bait? Illegal in NSW QUOTE Can you still fish from the weir in the park, down past the junction to the small bride going out of town? From memory 100 meters downstream all the way up to the weir is a NO FISH ZONE there's signs QUOTE Can you fish under the main town bridge still? Yep ! that's where we told CATCH22 all the flathead are cant help you with your other Q's & not sure any place sells bait + it's more fun colecting your own -------------------- Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

Thanks Rumpus and Jumpus for the help.
Yeah, I don't know Mr Sumo, but from the looks of his previous posts, he definately would be the best person for "local knowlege". I'm just trying to read through all his topics at the moment, to see if I can gain some furter insite to the area. From the looks of what I have read so-far, alot has changed since I was there last. |

Hi Daniel,
Yes a few things have changed, but not a lot, If you did go to school in Manilla 12 years ago you do know who I am, Back then my shop was only selling Fishing tackle as a sideline, you would have known it as the Mower and Chainsaw Centre on the park Corner, North side of the Bridge, well I went full on Fishing Tackle and Firearms, I have closed the shop two years ago, but please call in when you hit town, as I might be going away early in August. -------------------- I WANNA GO: FISHIN WITH SUMO.

Thanks Mr Parris. I will try to stop by.
I pretty much kept to myself down there. I knew a few people, like the Ruttleys, the McKenzies, Tony Kimba, and the Moore familys, but apart from them and my teachers, and a few students, I don't really remember too many people from my time there. BTW, do you need a firearms licence in NSW to use a bow or a sling shot? I've been thinking about getting a few rabbit skins while I am down there, but am unsure of the rules and regulations there. Bows are OK as long as it's not a Crossbow they are illegal
If you're refring to those slingshots which wrap onto your arm ?? Last I knew they were illegal to own as well -------------------- Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

Cool. Yeah, just a standard 10lb sling. Works well for with 30 cal shot. Yeah, arm mounts are illegal here too, but standards are Ok. Just unsure if there is a ban or whatnot on them down there, as there was talk of it when I was there in primary school.

Yeah, I'm looking at a 60lb combo at the moment.
Bow, Bag, Nylon case, Spare string, 20 arrows, 20 round heads, 20 tri tips, spare knocks, and quiver all for $450 Beats the hell out of this little 30lb bow I've had for the last 10 years.lol. Good for rabbits and cats, but a 30lb bow just p1sses off pigs. |
