Kmart is the cheapest place for fireline, which goes ok on spin reels. Not much good on baitcasters though. Too Stiff..

get a 125yd spool for roughly $25

Thing with fireline is that you have to break it in. It does get better when it is older but still.........

You could just topshot your mono with some braid (50 meters or so)

That way you get the advantages of lower stretch and thinner line which is good for lure casting or fishing fairly deep in currents and the economic of the mono backing.

But yes not all reels need to have braid on it.
I just put some good 6lb mono on my tierra to test it and this also casts very good. just not as direct on the feel.

Think Braid is alot of hype Jack

I tried it & didn't like it

And I cant put any sense that it gives you a better direct feel either

If you're only top shoting with 50 meters then you're only gaining the smallest of advantages of mono & not enough to warrant making that claim.

As far as feel goes ???

That should be coming from your rod tip & not your line after all you're not holding the line when retrieving the lure are you ???

Was talking to someone the other week & was told braid is big over here & not the USA apparantly sales are very low over there & the Americans much prefer their Mono

I have not been fishing as long as you have by a long shot, but I am trying out all sorts of lines and have, for lure fishing, a prefrence for braid as you can feel your lure hitting a snag/bottom or fish which is something I did not have with the mono I had before that (was like a rubber band compared to braid)
This stretch makes it pretty much impossible to feel anything on the rod (at least for me it did).
As with lures/sp "use whatever you feel happy with" as they all catch fish. fish.gif

I admit that the mono was a cheap 5 bucks spool and I have now spooled a reel with a better quality mono which I will have to give a fair go in the weeks to come.

I may be swayed away from braid, but sofar I like my braid. tongue.gif
I only put the comment about topshotting the braid as you can spool several reels with one 125-150 meter spool and save yourself some money. I personally do not want any more knots than necessary and would not do this myself.

Fair enough Jack everyone is entitled to their views

Some like the stuff I didn't esp after being told how great the stuff was but I guess unless you try it you'll never make up your own mind.

I have quite a few spin outfits & what I did one day was spool up 2 identical outfits one with braid & the other with a quality mono.

They both cast the same retrieved the same I felt all hits exactly the same so I couldn't see what all the big hype was about

I gave the braid a fair trial around 7 months or so & I did alot of fushing @ the time.

Had a good run with the braid for a while then the windknots started something I've not had with mono

some cheaper but very good quality braid is the Hawk tournament 100% dyneema braid its very quiet and subtle unlike fireline I also use and recommend fireline but its a bit noisier and wind knots a bit more readily for my liking ,,the hawk is cheap and very realiable and best thing is it wont break down like a lot do if fished salt and fresh water [tend to break easily some of them if fished salt and fresh]

Hawk is around $40 for 300 meters which is pretty good value in my books and is the best performing cheap stuff IMO I dont know who distributes the stuff I think it comes from youvella or guss so may have to ask by name if not on the shelf.

I like braid purely for its diameter if i fish 40-50lb then i wont be imited to spool or reel size...everything has disadvanteges even mono use what you feel comfortable with the debate will never cease to continue thats for sure...

Another cheaper substitute is tough line very very good quality my favourite in fact very durable and very subtle hardly a noise from it and doesnt wind knot at the slightest chance it gets. around $35 for 150yds but very very good quality and long lasting features, my personal favourite

most lines if pushed over their breaking strains will snap or poorly maintained lines mono, fluro, braid whatever you use has a breaking strain now even braid has a igfa standard on the good stuff so it has caught up with the other in leaos and bounds.

As jack said fireline needs to be brocken in, once that hapens then it becomes mutch softer .
most good braids will be about the some $ . The best onei have used is called dynema , a lot of braids have dynema in them but not as mutch as the pure dynema its hard to find now its as thin as cotten soft and easy to cast . most braids these days are stiff and need brakeing in .
peaple use it 1-2twice and think its no good.

jass the baitcasters we used on the cod had dynema and when U got the rythem going you were doing pretty good .
the dynema on those baitcasters have been on those reels for years and still going strong.
