Just curious as to what line you would recomend I run on my tiagra.

I am currently running some 16kg mono (cr*p) i got cheap of ebay, however it is very soft and cant take any punishment.

Am looking at platypus pretest in 15kg or lo-stretch in 15kg, mostly cause they have a thin diameter and i can fit more on the narrow spool.

Used for trolling for kingys/tuna etc, possibly for livebaits and cubing later?? if it would be any good for this.

Yeah I would run a nice thin 10-15kg mono. A really thin mono is Moimoi Hi-Catch Zex. I have it in 8kg and it's 0.33mm in diameter. It's blue in colour. It can also take a hell of a beating. B)

I'd spool it with no bigger than 6 - 8 kg
In my books line capacity is far more important than higher breaking strain esp if you're going to cube for fin they'll spool you that quick it ain't funny.
Unfortunately for you I think the reel is far to small for what you intend to use it for hook up to a good fish & you'll know exactly what I'm talking about

True. Load it up with some 40lb braid and you'll have a ripper kingie reel.

But Jumpy has more gamefishing experience than me, so a good 20lb mono for tuna? ^_^

I'll tell you guys a little story happened many years ago when I had just finished my apprentiship which I did @ a large Co called QANTAS.

Anyway all my tradesmen used to say to me that when I finished my apprenticeship I'd know Sierra Foxtrot Alpha in other words they were putting Sh*t on me even back then I was a smart arse & used to give them heaps tongue.gif

When I left & got a job in the private sector I realised those tradesmen were right I knew Sierra Foxtrot Alpha not my fault I had idiot tradesmen who taught me nothing.

Anyways I made a big stuff up on a job got the measurements wrong & being the inexpirience tradesman that I was attempted to fix the job by cutting it down to the correct size spend all day doing so & the boss was out of the workshop to boot which didn't help my cause.

Anyway when he came back that afternoon he looked @ what I'd done shaking his head in disbelief told me I was a idiot & I'd spent all day & only managed to save one piece of meter from the job worth about $100 tongue.gif

Now if I'd started the job from scratch I would've far better off & it would've been finished that day instead of the next.

Moral of this story is dont try using something just because you have it esp if it wont do the job for you, look @ trading or selling it & get what you really need good fish are hard to come by these days & you'd be wise to have the gear to handle them.

That's why I dont allow anybody to bring Game Gear aboard my boat, because of people like yourself who come ill equiped

Yep

Not really, you asked a question & I gave my opinion not everyone fish's the same way & I'm set in mine & like I said it's not logical to use something if it dosen't suit the purpose you are trying to use it for

Mate nothing wrong with Tiagra's got them myself but alot bigger than yours thats all

Tiagra's are the upper end of the shimano range TLD's are not as good or robust

I'll put in my 2 cents. Rum, you have a killer hoodlum reel there. Load it up with some 40lb braid and you have something to use for big KUNG FU FUSH. If you want, the Tyrnos is sort of the bridging reel between the TLD and Tiagra. Sell the Tiagra for about $400-500 (you haven't used it?) and get a bigger Tyrnos to break even. Unfortunately the biggest size you can get is a 30.

HTH

yea, good call fish... its doing my head in... i got it and im gonna load it up with 30lb.. i dont go chasing marlin or anything mainyl kingys and stuff like that so it will handle a kingy and the like no worries at all and if i get lucky enough to hook a marlin or a tuna or somthing, then id better hang on and hope for the best!

Just been having a read of the Book and thus are my options

20lb 690yrd
30lb 470yrd

or 720yrd of 65lb braid with 60yrd of 40lb mono
or 570yrd of 65lb braid with 120yrd of 40lb mono

so possibly braid backing is an option... I know jumpas, you have said that you dont like knots in your main line, however if i get someone who knows what there doing to tie my knots then this might be my best option. probbaly go 50lb braid (instead of 65??) as i already have 300yards of fireline in 50lb and then put as much mono in 30lb on top of this.

At least this way i get my line capacity at the weight i want on the rig ive already got, seems like the compramise that suits me the best.. seems like a waste of 50lb braid though :( haha

Tyrnos' are damn good. Nowhere near a Tiagra but still damn good. You can tell by 1-The technology and "sister" reels and 2-The price tag proves it. tongue.gif

If you want a 30 size game reel without spending any $$$, swapping wouldn't be a bad option.

P.S. Of the three guys, make sure the reels have 2-speed gearing. ;)
