Although there is many Eel Tail Catfish in Northern NSW Fisheries have now placed catch limits of 2 in rivers and 5 in Dams and are talking of banning catching of Catties in NSW rivers.

Although many people say that they don't like or wouldn't eat freshwater Catfish, Many tons of them are imported from Thailand, Vietnam and various Asian countries, they are commonly sold in chainstore seafood sections and most seafood outlets as BASA fillets.

Just in addition to the Imported Basa Fillets, Freshwater Catfish are harvested in WA and sold on the Aussie market as COBBLER, or Freshwater Cobbler.
