there was an argument at work were it was said that if u over power a boat to much it will distort the transom to the point were the boat can no longer be trimmed and in a worst case it may be possible to berry the nose, i am not talking about small tines with over size motors but much larger boats in the 5 or 6mt range, could this be true.

you would hope that a quality built boat would not distort.
However carring to much weight up front in a ribbed tinny or possibly a poly?? It could happen?? I highly doubt it though as you would need alot of weight up there to counteract the natural planing of the hull once underway. Once the boat is planning and therefore not producing much drag i would imagine yuo could wind on as much power as you wanted, untill it was to much and flipped you backwards! |

If you could get some figures from th amount of force that an engine drives through the water at
and the weight of the boat etc it could easily be figured out using some basic physics. Im quite sure that as long as the boat gets on the plane it is not a problem, th issue would maybe be an overloaded boat struggeling to get onto the plane, then it becomes a possability? |

Tell the guys @ your work that Jumpus said they are talking out of their :drop the daks: & that I can see the brown stuff coming out
Boats have a HP rating & if you exeed it then the warrantee on the boat is void As far as distorting the transom goes ?? well that is another porky those guys are telling you exept maybe in the case of some of the tinny's which dont have a proper transom just a drop down section to allow for hight so as motor can be bolted to @ the correct hight. Even those tinny's do have a brace or braces to stop the transom from twisting so distortion is kept to a minimun. Now you've got very little if any chance @ all of distorting a true tansom simply because of the way they are supported. The reason HP ratings are attached to a hull is for a number of reasons here's a couple a] get a lunatic with to much power & he'll kill someone then sue boat manufacturer b] To much power can also push the boat to it's limits & cracking can occur [not distortion] QUOTE over power a boat to much it will distort the transom to the point were the boat can no longer be trimmed and in a worst case it may be possible to berry the nose, Not very likly @ all poly ! For starters unless you're a goose you gradully power up a boat you dont hit the hammers from the onset unless you're a ski/race boat & those type of boats are generally very well balanced. As far as trim goes on a boat ?? Well I dont think to many people really know how to use it correctly they take off with motor tilted up then wonder why it takes so long for the boat to start planning correctly. There's a big difference between Tilt & Trim Tilt brings your motor up & down Trim allows you to fine tune your ride -------------------- Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

that was my argument if the power is so gr8 it would lift the nose and not drive it down. i do believe that a transom can distort to a point but i think it would brake before it started pushing the nose down

unless thre was a massive wigfht in the front of the boat then it would just flip if there was that much power?
there is very little weight on th transom once planning, because the water passing under the hull is supporting the boat (as long as its setup correctly) With our old race boats and some high powered ski boats you will see them with the motor trimmed up and the boat very rarley touching the water, this is done with great feel through the "Foot Pedal" and a VERY High power engine! Maybe in this case if you had a ton of steel up the front of the boat then it could as the boat is not being supported by the water and the point of torsion is at the rear where the motor joins the hull. A fishing boat or similar this is not the case because the water is in constant contact with 3/4 of the boat and all the engine is doing is providing forward thrust, there is no way it could build enough twist or torque to flex back of the boat.. Torque = F (being the force) X Distance Ill have to work out Hp to Nm to figure it out and then figure in the weight of the hull but it is possable to figure out exactly which way th driving force of the engine is, and im pretty sure you will find that it is straight forward whn planning. When the hull is in displacment then there are more forces such as resistance on the hull and th formula gets more complecated.. Wait till i have had a few rums and ill gt my notes out. Look at it this way Poly, the distortion will assist your boat in planing and could be considered a Poly feature.
You should email the Poly website and suggest they add flexible transoms to their feature list. -------------------- SEAFARER: Fine as a Fairy's Fart |
