Got up this morning at the unearthly hour of 6am to head out for a fish off the rocks. Surf cam showed a small wave around the 2ft range so it all looked to be perfect apart from the rising tide. The spot fishes best on the runout, but we have to go when the opportunity arises.
Got out there about 8am and had the place to myself. Not enough swell to wet my feet, for the first hour. I found the fish a long way out, with the float barely visible. Landed three nice fish around 40cms in the first quarter hour and then they slowed down as the tide rose. A husband and wife Mongolian couple arrived about 8.30am to keep me company. A lovely couple who always share their food with me and despite the language difficulties, we get on well. Some other fishos had left the place in a real mess, with plastic bags, hook packets, tangles of mono, cigarette packets and butts as well as a couple of very smelly green morays wrapped in line. This place used to be pristine for more than 20yrs and now a certain element have 'discovered' it and it is looking like a tip. Anyway, enough whinging!!. It was just a glorious day with smooth conditions and enough fish to keep me happy. Saw a school of Salmon cruising up the coast, which must have been several football fields in size. Thousands of them feeding on baitfish. Wonder how big the baitfish school must have been. I ended up with 12 good sized, solid fish in two and a half hours, so that was more than enough for me. A pelican decided to invade the rock pool where my fish were tethered in the keeper net and one made its dash for freedom. I tried to corral it for about 5 minutes but gave up. As the tide got higher, a wave washed into the pool and I saw it power off into the ocean with the backwash. The old couple only had one fish so I gave them a few before heading off. The fish wouldn't lie still for a photograph, so I took one of the catch after they all developed a case of 'red throat'. I dread summer for hiking out to this spot, as I was knackered after the return journey today. Too hot for winter and it is only going to get hotter. Maybe I am getting too old.

Chad - yeah you can keep it in the fridge, rolled in damp newspaper. Keeps for a couple of weeks. I never use weed, only cabbage off the rocks. (I guess that is a species of weed).

What broke your boat, I'm surprised Jumpy McGyver couldn't fix it with a coat hanger & a ball of string.
In the end I didn't need any tit relays mine was just a low on fluid. It's got a very slow leak in the tilt ram and hasn't been topped up for a few years. -------------------- SEAFARER: Fine as a Fairy's Fart |
