Tilt & Trim - Oil Leak Options

Oil leak fixed.

My cousin who is a motor mechanic dropped by this afternoon and had a look at the leakage.
He found the tilt gauge sensor which bolts into the cylinder was broken (it is a plastic thread type bolt).

As i don't have a tilt gauge on my dashboard, we decided to block the hole with another bolt which was modified to fit.
(was quoted today $52 for a replacement one, which i dont need anyway)

Topped up with hydraulic oil and tested a number of times up and down and thankfully no more leaks.

But dont like the topping up idea esp since you mentioned oil was milky
That means water is mixed with it & over time you will get rust inside the system,

For the cost of replacing the oil I'd drain & flush existing then refill.

Another thing you dont know how much water has mixed in & the water will effect the viscosity of the oil

Hey Majed, I'd find Blackwoods or somewhere and get a Brass Plug to fit that way you won't have any electrolysis problems, and make sure you use hydraulic oil to refill it not engine oil.

Pretty sure the cast is alloy SUMO & Brass is one of the worse materials you could plug up the thread with

Jumpus - There was actually no oil or water left in the pump. It completely drained out of the hole. But just to be safe, i will double check tomorrow and change if need be.

Sumofishin - yes i am using hydraulic oil.

Dont really know the motor Majed but my brother has got same as yours if I get the chance I'll have a look @ it 2morrow see if there's a draining option which I doubt.

Dont like your chances of cracking loose one off the hydraulic lines they'd be coroded in you may want to keep tilting the motor up & down to force as much of the fluid out as you can back out from that hole you plugged.

yeah I crack one of the lines at the bottom of the ram, I top up. tilt up down a few times crack again to see what oil is like if still milky drain and start process again

You seem to be knocking these problems over Majed, good for you.
I can't see how your sending unit fits into a hole in your trim ram, mine is an external plastic thing.

It definately sits in the hole of the trim ram. Its made out of plastic too but screws on into the ram, but it was snapped and the bolted part remained in the ram. We custom fitted a stainless stell bolt into the hole which seems to have stopped the leak. A replacemnent send bolt is $52, but i dont need it.
