I had a day off today and so I though that I could go fishing.
Today was a good day to go out. I packed the car ready to do some rock hopping, just needed to get some burley. I got that and was ready to go fishing. Got to the location and checked the waves. Flat. Started to unpack the car and setup the rod. My mistake I took my mobile and low and behold I got a call. Packed the car and went to do what was necessary. I was delayed by an hour and a bit as a result. This resulted in less time to fish with the low tide and to remain safe while fishing. The waves now starting to come up a little but nothing over the top. Started the normal berleying but this was not producing a trail just sat on the surface for a little bit and here come the birds. I had recently put on new line on the Alvey and so this was the first time that I was using this. First few cast tiny little nibbles and the bait is gone. No problem I have plenty of bait. Cast out one more time and the line springs off the Alvey. I have had this sometimes with the thinner diameter mono on the Alvey. I did not bring a spare reel and thought that it should be fine. Took off some line and rigged up again. A few more cast and out it comes again. I pull in the line and along with that a wrasse. The first fish. More casting and more line coming off the reel. I made a decision I will throw out this bloody line and but the thicker stuff that is less springing. Another decision made I will stay and fish this out as I only have another 1 to 2 hours before I have to go if the waves come up. I caught more fish including one under size Rock Blackfish, only 28cm. That was a lot of fun and I could see that it was taking me to the rocks but the wiley Christos directed him to turn the other way. Did not know it was a Rock Blackfish at the time just that it gave a bit of weight. I should have gone after that as I think I spent another 3 or 4 cast loosing line from it just springing off the spool. The waves coming over the top now and I am spending more time just getting snagged and cut off. I only fished for about 2 - 2.5 hours as it turned very bad very quickly. Time to go home. |

you wanna spill the beans on the line brand you had trouble with? I do not use alveys, but just in case! Sorry to say but I do not remember the brand. Not one that I recognized, it was the only one that came in 600 meters packet. I normally use 450 - 500 meters on the spool and throw the rest in the storage. I used a .30 to .35 on the alvey as that what's works best especially when the wind picks up. I forgot to mention that I did wet the line to give it some weight but that did not do too much good once dried out. I ended up casting this as you would a baitcaster with the thumb to slow the line down. Well I was using the fingers instead of the thumb. Sometimes I would miss and ouch. The fishing bug was there and so the little whips were not going to stop me. It took a couple of waves. |

If I had brought it with me I would have swapped it over with in the first few seconds of this having a problem. I have had this before some fours years ago and after swapping over to a little thicker line no more problems. |
