Trade balance turns negative as exports drop

Australia's trade balance turned into a deficit in January, as exports fell because of weaker commodity prices.

The balance on goods and services was a deficit of $673 million in January, seasonally adjusted, compared with a downwardly revised surplus of $1.325 billion in December.

Economists’ forecasts had centred on a surplus of $1.4 billion in January.

During January, exports were down 8 per cent in adjusted terms and imports also were down 1 per cent, the ABS said on Friday.

The dollar droped 0.2 cent to $US1.0623 on the news.

Squandered is the thing Jumpy, it wouldn't be so bad if we got something substantial but pink bats, $1000 to jumpstart the economy and shadecloth in schools just doesn't cut it for me.

Honestly they should all be put before the courts and prosecuted for financial mismanagement.
