Hi guys,
Im just back from my recent trip to Broome, though i had a shocker. We went to the Rowley Shoals which is about 170nm due west of Broome and other remote reefs and islands. Allot of trolling was done and a bit of bottom bashing produced some fine fish. Before we sailed we chatted to the guys at Tackle World Broome, and was advised Sailfish were a plenty and the record was 60 Sails in one day!! We purchased a fair bit of gear and look forward to getting out there. The seas were calm with a maximum of 0.5m seas and the wind never got over 14knots so it was sensational! I unfortunately could not keep it together, 1stly my lures did not attract anything worth keeping even though they were the same as the guys catching fish, then the insides of my reel decided they didnt like where they were and exploded while battling a 1.6m shark, i managed to land him and after a few hours of work i managed to rebuild the reel into a working order. The final failure was the roller in the tip of my rod fell out! why meeee what did i do so wrong! I still ended up with a Spanish mackerel, dog tooth tuna and the spangled emperor so it was not a total loss. What i have now learnt is buy expensive gear as it will last, my rod and reel were bought in a combo gear buy Now their retired im hunting for a TLD20 and a good ugly stick to replace the broken equipment. we hit a few reefs and this is what we came up with. 3x Sail fish many Dog tooth tuna (20-50kg) many Spanish Mackeral biggest was 1.39m few Green Job fish few Spangled emperors mine 0.60 monster corral trout (lost 1/2 to a shark) Heaps of sharks from 0.60m to 2.3m plus other stuff FLY sail FLY!! ![]() I was the skipper that help landing this great fish (me at the tail) ![]() my spango!! ![]() Mixed grill ![]() this guy is a wopper!! 1.39cm Spanish Mackerel taken on a fresh garfish ![]() ![]() This post has been edited by A pirate: Apr 22 2008, 04:41 PM -------------------- A Pirate by name, A Pirate by nature! nice mate!
Too bad about your gear mucking up though, that's got to be frustrating when you're out on the water. Looking forward to going there myself in a few months -------------------- Flying Dutchman.. soon to be fishing my way around Oz. Always wanted to get there, but then there are hundreds of places all over Aust I wanted to get to but never did. Bad luck with the gear mate, would have got your blood boiling a bit, to be way over there and not have decent gear. Good going pirate. I remember fishing off the jetty at Broome, and rolling up with a 13ft beach rod and 7" Alvey loaded with 20lb line. The locals laughed at me, as they tossed in their 300lb handlines. I still managed some big Golden Trevally up to 14lbs and queenfish. Had to handline them up the jetty though, as the rod couldn't lift the weight. A great spot, and one I will be going back to.

im now hunting for a new rod and reel setup for deep water fishing.
Ill be going back there so time will tell. any suggestions for get to look at budget is about $250 on a reel and about $200 on a rod ~ if lucky i could manage $500 for total set up inc line. Thanks guys, I still had fun though frustrated to hell! Damn equipment...Let this be a warning to all spend more in gear to prevent this happening to you. (My combo costed about $180 so that says it all) This post has been edited by A pirate: Apr 22 2008, 05:22 PM -------------------- A Pirate by name, A Pirate by nature! I support FILLET and RELEASE! Great photos, reminds me of the time I spent at Wickham [WA] fishing out from Port Samson. In those days there wernt all that many going out so the fishing was pristine. On one occasion my brother and I came home with 10 spanish maks wieghing in at just over 1000 lb,Huge fish. That was back in the early 70's

the reel failure consisted of a broken spring mounting and worn crank/spool pin and a bent free spool mechanism plate (next to the crank/spool pin). What happend mid fight with allot of drag on, suddenly the spool free spun giving me a huge birds nest and no way of cranking the line in. After a few hits i managed to get it working again to wind in but no drag (stuck on max), I managed to pull the 1.6m shark in. The reel then needed to huge pull down which took about 2.5hours and 3or 4 attempts, not to mention loss of a few 100m of line.

Good fishing report. It is very bad lust that you lost your tackle to one thing or other.
Very strange to have som much go wrong, but then again I do not game fish. |

im looking for a rod and reel that would be loaded up with 35lb-40lb line that can be used for bottom bashing and trolling.
The setup must be strong but versatile as it will travel allot and cop a bit of neglect while at sea. My budget for the lot is around $500 (rod and reel), though my main concern is the reel at the moment as i can repair my rod to a working state with a new screws and roller pin. when out targeting fish (mainly in the tropics) i mainly chase mackerel, tuna (dog tooth and northern blue), wahoo, corral trout, big travallys etc what brands do I look at? better worse -------------------- A Pirate by name, A Pirate by nature! pirate you're making it very hard
![]() Gran t you I'm a bit of a loopy when it comes to tackle & go overboard But with good reasons in alot of the cases & it's justified cause these days it's becoming harder to find the fishy's & when you do find them you dont want your tackle letting you down as you recently expirienced. I'm not suggesting that you go out & buy the rolls royce of gear just gear suited to your needs Shimano TLD 25 ??? I have one but I have it spooled with 6kg line not 35lb-40lb line as you are wanting to spool up with & that TLD of mine will out live me simply because I dont stress it & use it wisely. QUOTE when out targeting fish (mainly in the tropics) i mainly chase mackerel, tuna (dog tooth and northern blue), wahoo If you were trolling with a TLD 25 & a decent fish hit you I'm afraid the TLD 25 couldn't hold enough line capacity Dont know if you saw this thread http://www.fishing-oz-style.info/forum/ind...c=1209&st=0 Reel is pretty good as a troll reel & I've landed many a good YFT on it BUT !!! A wee bit heavy if you intend to bottom bounce QUOTE the other reel i was looking at was the OKUMA 30 titus for $179 at BCF. Well stop looking cause they're pretty crappy & I wouldn't give one to a jap on Anzac day. The same reel is marketed under the brand name Sailor & Jaylor pulled them apart then tossed them in the bin -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |
