Fishing oz style _ Game Fishing _ Bermi And Tuna

Posted by: nimrod Jun 17 2010, 02:19 AM

Just got back from a week down at Bermagui.
Haven't seen that many good sized YFTuna in a very long time.
My main target is Snapper and Morwong and done all right in
that department for the first 2 days, came back each day and
seen plenty of Tuna being cleaned at the tables, so decided to give my mate
a chance of hooking into one of these mighty fish, he hadn't caught
a yellowfin before.
Headed out to 12 mile and wasn't dissapointed, on the way out we seen
stripies cutting up the surface chasing sauries, so started a troll
about 90 metre mark. Only managed one stripy by the time we hit
12 mile.
Set a cube trail and the first drop the 15kg rig loaded up after
only about 60 metres of dropping.
I told my mate to load up on it, so he did. 20 minutes later he had his first
Yellowfin Tuna on the deck, no scales on the boat and I was somewhat
dissapointed that it was only around 30-35 kg but my mate was histerical
and was jumping around like his feet were on fire.
Once we managed to calm him down a bit, we set the lines out again,
I tipped the berley trail was well and truelly broken by this time and didn't feel
confident of any more action till we re established the trail, how wrong,
within 2 minutes my mate is on again, this time he's much more confident
and puts some mustle on the stick. He said this is much bigger then his first one
and was starting to get a bit cheeky and over confident, the way he was going
I thought he was going to loose it, but I let him go cause he needs to learn.
To my surprise he soon had the fish showing colour and I lent over and gaffed
it and dragged it over the side. Pretty well the same size as the first.
We headed back to the ramp as 2 is plenty for us and our needs.
Got back to the ramp, cleaned the boat down and headed back to the farm.
Went back to the ramp late that afternoon and couldn't believe the amount of
yellowfin and bluefin carcuses in the bin and all over the near shoreline.
There were skellitons everywhere in the next few days with some monster fish
among them.
Fish up to 100 kilo. Looks like the good old days are coming back.
Glad my mate didn't hook up with anything big as I doubt if he could
handle one over the 50 kilo mark
