Fishing oz style _ Fishing Reports _ Niggers Are Fun

Posted by: kkw Apr 1 2014, 06:12 PM

Went for a fish this morning, deciding to hit the ocean rocks near Marley. Went with my good mates
Whispering Jack and Bob the busdriver, who are my regular rock fishing buddies. After a bit of a
hike, we arrived to see glorious conditions and only a 1m swell. A big pod of dolphins were
cartwheeling and jumping very high out of the water and kept us entertained for about 10 minutes.
Plenty of good, fresh cabbage on the rocks, so we baited up and got into fish pretty well immediately.
I could see them slapping the surface of the water, so shortened my float to have only 2ft leader to
the bait. The fish were going nuts. All good eating size, around 36 - 40cm and that lovely silver and
bronze colour you get from ocean fish. They do go dark in the net though. I had no idea how many I
had in the keeper net, but more than enough for my needs, so tied on a green weed fly and got three
fish on that before calling it quits around 11am. Two and a half hours fishing was great fun but the
prospect of the hike back to the car was not as appealing. Anyhow, I dumped my bag in a shallow
pool and found that I had 18 fish. John had 15 and Bob had 6. We dropped a heap between us,
obviously lightly hooked. A great session in perfect conditions.
I hooked one fish which grossed me out a bit and I thought to myself, "how did this Homebush Bay
escapee get so far south?" On closer inspection, it looked like a pretty severe injury, but the fish was
obviously feeding ok. I would guess that it had been hit with a spear which took off the top jaw and
exited out the throat area. The fish has torn free and lived on. Just a guess on my part, but the injury
could well have occurred like that. I named him Joaquin Phoenix, and once you name an animal you
can't really terminate it, so it won freedom along with 11 of its mates. Three of us landed 39 fish
altogether in a 2.5 hour session. Not bad, seeing I hadn't been fishing for all of March - well once
inside, but that was a non event. Getting a new screen on my boat this week end and also have the
axle, springs and other bits to spruce up the trailer, then I may even get out for a 'proper' fishing
session.

That's a good haul of flesh there, getting a bit like me with the dreading of the walk back, though I can't make the walk down for a start.
Geeze you been talking about that trailer for a while now.

Well Frank and Poly ........ getting the screen on Saturday, motor serviced and found to be in great order a few months ago and ...... wait for it ....... new axle, springs, hubs, bearings etc fitted today. Killed my back. Those square axles with the springs and hubs attacked, are heavy. Know a great spot where I can anchor and fish for niggers, right near Molli Point.
Next job will be to drop the boat off the trailer, paint it and do the rollers. They are all ok, but a spruce up will be good. Fed has a huge bucket of cold gal paint that he said I could use.

182 lookers but not a single enquiry. I have done the axles etc since placing the ad, so I will remove it next week. Screen is getting done today. I need $8k for it but don't think it is going to happen, so will end up keeping it, most likely.

Went for a kayak outing on Thursday and fished around Kurnell. Water was like a millpond all day but it also rained for most of the time I was out. Now I have a bad cold. Landed some nice flathead and trevally on a 50mm Zerek live shrimp lure. Lost it to a very big, slow swimming flathead when the line touched the keeper net, which was full of fish. Paddled to the hot water outlet and trolled a deep diving hardbody. Kept hooking up small reddies around 30cms, that fought harder than the size they turned out to be. Also hooked up a numb ray on a squidgy but was happy for him to keep the lure. Was using a Viva rod with Shimano 2500 and 8lb braid with 6lb leader. Kept a couple of trevally and two 60cm flathead for meals. Turned my back for 10 seconds and the seagulls had knocked off a couple of fillets, which were under the keeper net, and flew off with them. Not happy, as they took the flathead rather than the trevally.
p.s. the Quinny looks good with the new screen.

Sounds like you had a reasonable day, except for those pesky seagull they always take the better meal.
A few photos of the boat would be nice.

now that is a good days fishing, how long were you out for mate, and it would be good to see some boat photos.
