Hi,
Just noticed today the tilt / trim on my Evinrude 1977 70HP is leaking oil from the port side hydraulic cyclinder.
I have had a closer look at it and found there is a whole around 3/4 of the way down the cylinder where something plugged the hole. When you tilt the outboard up or down the oil gushes out of it. I noticed there is some sort of electrical connector which maybe part of some trim gauge.
I have tried numorous bolts to block the whole but they dont seem to fit / work.
Does anyone know what i can do to plug this hole?
I don't have an option to insert pic in this post.
Thanks.
Majed.
it sounds more like this hole may be an overflow if something in the ram is blown like a seal?
I am no expert though?
I am assuming you are talking about a small hole (maybe a few mm diameter) near the top end of the ram?
Its a small hole at the 3/4 of the way down the cylinder on the left side.
I can't post the pics as there is no option on my menu to do so.
when you click ADD REPLY there is a little add image button
click on that
You're like an old womam Majed
Here I did it for you since I 4got to have a look @ motor 2day even blew the pic up
Still reckon it's O Ring or nylon washer

thanks for that, as i can't upload software from work...
Hey Majed
does it have a thread at the hole was there any bolt / screw there befor
it looks like the filler hole for hydrolic oil and you are missing the screw and it has an O ring or teflon washer to seal.
Frankly it cant be anything else.
there is only fill up hole .
get the right one {dealer or wrecker} YOU DONT WANT TO STUFF THE THREAD UP.
cheers steve
The filler hole is on the starboard side cylinder. Someone told me that that is where the mechanism for a possibly trim gauge sensor connects, but mine was disconnected as i have no gauge. So whateever was plugging the hole has gone missing. I'll try Alan at Picnic Point and see if he has any.
dont ask me im only new here
Has your tilt & trim ever worked Majed?
Upload the pic there & either use IMG option or just post direct link that way file wont be reduced in size by attachment option & will be easier to view.
While I'm @ it here's a pic of both option on this site

J.G the lower link to posting pitcher's is not on my computer, would this be a common problem or is it just me
Majed water is getting into the oil.
Not good & you definately have a leak & should be attended to right away
1st thing I'd be doing is finding fixing the leak
Then flush out the system to remove all traces of water in other words get rid of all the old fluid flush then add new fluid.
Dont just keep topping up long term even though there's oil in there the water factor has to be elliminated.
you could allways just wack in a rubber gromet and test it ,could it be a filler for that side ?
Majed, looking at your whole tilt/trim assembly from the rear you should see the following components from left to right (port to starboard)
1) Hydraulic pump, it will have an electrical connection to it.
2) Port trim ram.
3) Tilt ram, it's taller than the trim rams.
4) Starboard trim ram.
5) Hydraulic reservoir.
Where is this hole?
My money is on the reservoir. (Fill hole)
Oil leak fixed.
My cousin who is a motor mechanic dropped by this afternoon and had a look at the leakage.
He found the tilt gauge sensor which bolts into the cylinder was broken (it is a plastic thread type bolt).
As i don't have a tilt gauge on my dashboard, we decided to block the hole with another bolt which was modified to fit.
(was quoted today $52 for a replacement one, which i dont need anyway)
Topped up with hydraulic oil and tested a number of times up and down and thankfully no more leaks.
Thank you to all for your assistance.
Majed.
Good that you found/fixed leak
But dont like the topping up idea esp since you mentioned oil was milky
That means water is mixed with it & over time you will get rust inside the system,
For the cost of replacing the oil I'd drain & flush existing then refill.
Another thing you dont know how much water has mixed in & the water will effect the viscosity of the oil
Hey Majed, I'd find Blackwoods or somewhere and get a Brass Plug to fit that way you won't have any electrolysis problems, and make sure you use hydraulic oil to refill it not engine oil.
Pretty sure the cast is alloy SUMO & Brass is one of the worse materials you could plug up the thread with
Dont really know the motor Majed but my brother has got same as yours if I get the chance I'll have a look @ it 2morrow see if there's a draining option which I doubt.
Dont like your chances of cracking loose one off the hydraulic lines they'd be coroded in you may want to keep tilting the motor up & down to force as much of the fluid out as you can back out from that hole you plugged.
You seem to be knocking these problems over Majed, good for you.
I can't see how your sending unit fits into a hole in your trim ram, mine is an external plastic thing.
